ATS55 vs VG10
ATS55 vs VG10
Hi everyone! This is my first post. I am not a computer guy so please forgive my mistakes. I was wondering, is there a noticeable difference between my old Delica with ATS55 steel and the new ones with VG10? Thanks, Joe

Hi JoeKansas and welcome to the forum.
I don't have two of the same model in different steel to answer your question perfectly but I can say this. I have a ATS-55 Endura and a VG-10 Cricket and I found that VG-10 has a better edge retention and is somewhat easier to sharpen. However, because your delica is ATS-55, doesn't make it old. I love my Endura and find it much better that most knives out there. In my humble opinion, it's not worth buying a new delica just for the new steel. It's worth buying a brand new delica because Spyderco are the best though.
Stick around

Hi Joe - Welcome to this forum. I hope you will like it here. Many guys with an intrerest in Spyderco. A good place to visit.
In concern of your question. NO. the two steels are very much alike in composition and I don't believe that the added 0.03 % Phosphorus to the VG-10 will be noticed in normal use. The VG-10 also has a tiny bit more Chromium and Cobalt added what makes it a harder steel. Can well be that the added Phosphorus is used to prevent the steel from becoming too brittle.
Clipits work!

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum. It happens that I have both an ATS-55 and a VG-10 Delica and they perform equally well. They say that VG-10 has better corrosion resistance and edge retention, but frankly I couldn't notice any sensible difference between them. ATS-55 is one of my favorite steels, I had very good results with my ATS-55 knives. VG-10 OTOH is "trendy".
If I were you' I'd get myself a new Delica, anyway. It's updated and pretty affordable.

VG-10 is light years better than ATS-55. It holds an edge at least 85% better, is twice as easy to sharpen, never rusts, and is optimized by its molecular structure to be superior for use on blades with serrations. ATS-55 has a 45% chance of load bearing fracturing, corrodes even in the desert, and is harder to sharpen than carbide.
Actually, they're not that far apart. VG10 does seem to have a slight advantage in edge holding ability and rust resistance, but its pretty subtle. What ya should do is get an Endura in vg10 to complete the set...and then get a Delica in VG10, too, for scientific testing purposes. Ya gotta go head to head with 'em; how else can you be sure which performs better?
