longer Lum fixed blade tanto
longer Lum fixed blade tanto
Anyone else interest in seeing this made? 12" OAL, 6.75" blade length, 3/16" blade thickness, 1" blade depth, 8.1oz. Longer-bladed (and to my eye thus better-proportioned) than the existing Spyderco Lum FB tantos.
Or a Lum Upswept Fighter: 9" blade, OAL 14.75", 17.1oz, .252" blade stock, 1.186" blade depth

Hi Chombo,
Welcome to our forum.
Do you have these pieces? Or are they pictures that you found?

Hi Sal- I have neither of these knives. (Tho I do have your FB03 with custom abalone scales I had put on, since I like that knife so much.)

They all look good to me, but I'd have no use for the smaller knife in the top image.

Hi Chombo,
I have never seen any of the models shown. Though I have thought about making a short Wakizashi as an ethnic piece. Bug Tsuba.

This sounds awesome, and I'd definitely buy one. I'd also buy a Spyderco version of knife OP is suggesting.

I hope that you make them. I might like one.

Re: longer Lum fixed blade tanto
Bob Lum was an awesome knife designer>> one of my all time favorites to be sure. I'll probably never depart with my Spyderco C-46 Lum Tanto folder.
Sure I would love an "enhanced" version of the fixed blade LUM Tanto. Count me in!
Not sure which handle material I would like on that type of fixed blade. G-10 is a material that I don't think you can ever go wrong with. Although one of the older Micarta type materials that Spyderco used to make available would be great as well.
Anytime they want to bring it on is fine by me

Re: longer Lum fixed blade tanto
I just looked through many pictures of Bob Lum’s designs. So many excellent knife designs, all of which I’d love to see all them be made once again if his estate agrees.
There’s a two bladed knife and a bolstered Chinese folder that are awesome. That large tanto is spectacular as well.

Re: longer Lum fixed blade tanto
Here are 2 more photos of these 2 Bob Lum knives: the upswept fighter alone, and the upswept fighter and ~12"/14" tanto in the context of a few other Lums. I've asked the owner of these knives if he would allow them to be used as models for a production line. We'll see how he responds...

The longer "upswept fighters" are pretty neat.

Re: longer Lum fixed blade tanto
I'm sure it would be bad for collectors but I'd like this to be made out of a tough tool /carbon steel.
Re: longer Lum fixed blade tanto
I can get down with that. Cruwear, M4, Rex45/Hap40, 4V, Superblue, Vtoku2, etc.

Anything other than laminated San Mai would just be wrong :)

Re: longer Lum fixed blade tanto
Sal, the guy who owns most of these knives, who you could contact to ask about using them as templates for production versions, is the same guy who "gave" Spyderco "permission to use" his "photos in" your "tribute to Bob" Lum. You might remember who that is. I don't want to be more specific with his contact details, out of respect for the forum posting rules + the fact that those details would be seen publicly. Just say so if you want me to call in to Spyderco to leave his email address + blogspot address.
Re: longer Lum fixed blade tanto
I would also buy a +6"-blade length Lum Chinese Fighter if Spyderco produced one:
Re: longer Lum fixed blade tanto
I’m late to this, and it’s probably not inside Spyderco’s wheelhouse, but I’d love to see a daisho (katana/wakizashi set) from you.
