Perfect thread for me to post up and appreciate my late Ti Fluted Military.

This knife was stolen from me by a lowlife tow truck driver after my car broke down in the New Hampshire White Mountains. At the prices they command these days, the knife is unfortunately irreplaceable.



These two shots are from the last hike this knife ever went on with me. After that it has most likely spent the rest of its days being used and abused by some POS who has no idea what he’s doing. Or it was sold to a pawn shop for a tenth of its value, so that POS driver could get his next fix…




This knife may be gone from my collection but it is not forgotten!

Nice pics Nick! Well deserved ode to that particular example. Let's hope some kid found it in a Pawn Shop and thinks of it as his most special treasure and will become a Sypderco collector some day.

Dear Rollbar:

Part of the reason for the flat screws is to facilitate a four-position clip--as in the transition from the Para Military to the Para Military 2. The liners on the original Military don't support that, so there's not much advantage in making the screw change.

Hopefully I don't derail the thread too much but
I am very curious about your thoughts on the Military as a SD option. It seems to me that it would do very well in that role due to the blade shape, size, ergos and overall outstanding cutting performance of the knife. I imagine the liner lock could be a concern on just about every knife EXCEPT the military, having used the knife for years I have complete faith that the lock would hold in a SD situation. I have seen you tout the endura numerous times but have never seen your comments on the military. Furthermore, how do see the military 2 with 4 way clip and comp lock fairing as a SD carry? Thank you in advance.

Thanks for your question.

The Military is a very capable knife and certainly suitable for self-defense application. Its disadvantages in that role, in my opinion, include its tip-down carry, the generous cutout for the lock release, and the lack of a trainer version.

Tip-down carry requires you to either reposition the knife in your hand after the draw for a thumb opening, or use a handle-drop opening, which requires gripping a fairly small area of the blade and, again, adjusting your grip afterward. I prefer not to have fine motor skills in my deployment methods.

The handle cutout makes releasing the LinerLock easier. From a utility standpoint--especially when wearing gloves--that makes sense. From a self-defense standpoint, I would prefer a more deliberate closing style.

Finally, without a trainer, you can't truly develop the skills you need to use the knife effectively as a defensive weapon. Without those skills, you'll never realize the knife's full potential.

Thank you for the response and the insight. Your point about the large cutout is something I've never considered, and I can see that being an issue with unpredictable torques and twists that could happen in a life or death struggle, which may lead to lock disengagement.
As far as tip down, maybe I am an odd case, or just have carried the military so much that when I draw it from my back pocket it falls perfectly in my hand and I can deploy it faster that I can most of my smaller, tip up spydercos, but I have never had to test this in a stressful situation so I can't be certain of my ability.
The lack of trainer is certainly a drag, and hopefully with the new versatility of the military 2 as an " MBC worthy blade" we will eventually get a trainer. While we are at it maybe a trainer for the police 4 as well, as I'm sure LEO'S are gobbling those up. My dad (RIP) was a veteran police officer of 25 years and carried one on each side.
