Which Centofante C25 or C50 is this?

#1

Post by hannes w »

A friend of mine gave me this little riddle to solve...

G10 handle
plain edge
ATS 34
Golden, Colorado made
approx. 4" Blade

So which model is it?
When were they produced?
Is it a rare find or just a middle of the road Spydie?

Thanks for your help

Hannes

ps sorry for the crappy pic

It is probably the C50. The C25 has a blade just under three inches and the C50 has a blade length of 3 5/8 inches.

That's the big one c 50 blade length 3 5/8" overall length 8 9/16 inches and weight 2.9 ounces

c 25 length 2 7/8" overall length 6 7/8" weight 2.25 ounces both were made with ATS 34 steel.

Finally I knew the answer and I got there first those old catalogs come in handy. :)

It is the C-50 which is one of my Sacred Cows in the Spyder line up. It is a Spyder that was horribly overlooked and underrated when it was in production. Worker#9 and I both are trying to resurrect this wonderful classic. This knife would be just super in VG-10 or S30V. Let's give it a try ;) :spyder:

Length of blade compared with diameter of hole makes me "fairly" sure its a C50. They were introduced in '98, appear in the 2000 catalog, but no entry for them in the '01 edition. Like every discontinued Spydie, it has now attracted a small but vocal cult following. But JFJ is still trying to get rid of a few of the SE version so I would not call it either "rare" or a "hot item". Others, I am sure, will disagree.

Thanks for all your help so far

I really got the impression that the blade is at least 4'' maybe because it's so slim...

It is a nice find at least. And rare enough to be happy about.

I don't think the rarity, desirability or value of a discontinued model in PE can be judged by the availability of its SE or CE brothers and sisters.
Although I know SE has a lot of faithful followers on this forum who even cut their fingernails SE the majority of the discontinued models are much more sought after in PE.

Nice C50 you got there guys. Enjoy them, the C50 and C25 are two beauties. The only complaint I heard about them was that the thumb hits the front end of the handles when you open the knife (the hole should have been positioned a bit far away from the pivot.
Oh I also remember someone broke the blade of his C25 in a piece of cheese  He admited eventually that the cheese was frozen and he made some prying with the knife. The blade broke exactly where the hole is. :(

Gerard, I would agree with you, up to a point. Sal has said the same thing, that collectors in particular favor PE over SE. That's why very few of the newer models aimed at the collector market come in SE anymore.

However, in the case of the C50, we are talking a model that has been OOP for over 4 years, so I think there is at least SOME significance to the fact that any variant of it can still be obtained easily. Plus, what I failed to add to my previous post, was that, IIRC, he still had the PE version as well, up to a few months back.

Perhaps part of the problem is that "desirable" is a very individual and subjective term. I can say with certainty what I find desirable, but the only way I can measure how desirable something is to others is by popularity, which is more objective and quantifiable. I can say with certainty that the Endura is popular, even though I do not personally find it particuarly desirable, because its consistently high sales figures bear out that "the market" disagrees with me. At the opposite extreme, I consider a LH PE Harpy extremely desirable, that is to say I WANT one very much, but have to admit that it was not at all popular, so, by extension, not many others ever found it desirable.
