Shocking how few Stainless Delica options there are

#1

Post by Haunted House »

Buying my stepdad a knife for Father’s Day, he loved my Delica (cruwear) so this year I wanted to get him one.
He uses his knives pretty hard and often, mostly outdoors in the south, so stainless is a must. He’s okay at sharpening(bought him a sharp maker last year). I wanted to get him something with some decent steel, better than old vg-10 (no offense to vg-10, but it’s 2022. I want to get him something that’s a step up from base model).

So I figured “easy enough, I’ll just grab him an s30v Delica”. Wrong.
Only s30v Delicas I can find are in ridiculous colors. pink or bright teal, that’s it.
Seriously Spyderco, those are your only s30v options? My stepdad is a 65 year old marine from the south. He ain’t carrying any bright colored knife, let alone pink or teal :winking-tongue.

So I thought… I guess ZDP-189? Wrong. Ain’t none.
Spy27? Nope. Doesn’t exist.
Salt 2? Same problem as the s30v options- neon bright handles.

Aaaaaand That’s about it for a stainless steel delica. I can get VG-10, or VG-10.

I love you to death Spyderco, you’re my favorite knife company, but this is really disappointing.

So now my choices are:
-Buy a $180+ M390 Delica from bento box.
-Buy a $160+ s30v delica with dyed black handle from Knives plus.
-Buy him a Benchmade :nauseated

That’s all I got. Anyone have any suggestions?
He won’t carry anything bigger than a Delica (he’s old school, likes small folders).

I would suggest getting the one you want (steel) and RIT Dyeing. Below is the DLT 20CV exclusive. The only "more" stainless you are going to find is the Salt 2. I have the Delica and the Endela exclusive from DLT. I left the Delica stock and I RIT Dyed the Endela black. Honestly, no one would ever know. You can remove the scales to RIT Dye or leave them on. Just Dry it and blow it out when done. I have done both methods.

Boom, ordered! I searched around for 20cv delica but that never popped up. You’re the man, thanks dsvirsky!

(My original statement to Spyderco still stands though. It is disappointing how few options there are for a stainless Delica).

Was just about to drop that here, I've got one and it's a cutting machine. Agree with the OP though Spyderco is light on options for such an iconic model.

Wait til he finds out it's called a delica :winking-tongue

The knifejoy delica is very nice. Good choice

The ticn blacked out dlt zome is also 20cv, but I do slightly prefer the blue color better.

Native 5 lightweight all day over the delica. Spy27 and dark blue or s30v and black.

The blacked out natives are nice. Plus they are dlc coated, which I prefer to ticn. Happened to have a couple close by. I wish I liked the feel of the Native more in my hand. It is awesome Spyderco has so many great options.

Go Native 5 instead. He will probably appreciate the USA made appeal of it too.

UKPK S110V could be another suggestion of merit.

I can't imagine caring about a handle being pink or teal regardless of age, region, or occupation. My grandpa was in WW2 and when he was alive he owned plenty of colorful oddities. My great uncle on the other side of my family was a decade older than your dad, from the south, and he was one of those old dudes that basically exclusively wore those bright colored Cuban shirts.

65 isn't even that old, he would have been a teen/young adult during peak-disco. A.k.a. the time of white bellbottoms and paisley blouses for men.
