Where's the SPY27?

Post by Doc Dan »

I would like to see more of my favorite Spydercos in SPY27, but so far only one has appeared. Do they have to be Golden models? A Lil Native LW would be quite nice. So would the UKPK leaf. The Military 2 would be cool, too.

I'd also like to see some Seki models like the Endura/Delica/Dragonfly line.

It's almost starting to feel like there are too many steels. I never thought I'd say that but it's like there's only so much manufacturing capacity and ultimately something is going to be put on the back burner. It seems like a large part of Golden's production is dedicated to sprints or exclusives and the in house stuff is sitting in que waiting. I guess Eric had said at one point that they were going to pull back on exclusives but that's been some time ago and you never know how many they had committed to doing before that decision was made since most exclusives are a couple years in the making. It does seem like there was a simpler time when you had VG10 and S30V and maybe one or two sprints a year in different steels and that was that, everything stayed in stock and was plentiful. Do we even know what capacity Spy27 will be made in? Will it essentially be an unofficial sprint that trickles out as they get around to making it or will it sit side by side with S30V as a regular production option? That would mean dedicating two steels to constant production, and if you're doing that with all the Golden models that's going to eat up a lot of capacity.

I'd like to see the Military get a run in SPY27. I just can't see the Military surviving into the long term after the release of the Military 2. It would be a really nice thing to see this much loved iconic knife get Spyderco's own flavour of steel before it fades into the past. There will be tones of exclusives in the Military's (2) future. This could well be the last chance to give the original a fitting send off.

This. I would even go as far as to say that there are too many models. On one hand it is super cool, but it also leads to the impression that basically nothing is available - especially since Spyderco did not choose to go with 'custom shop' option (a separate discussion that we had a few times, not trying to start another one). Look at Military. Until now there was one model that was hard to find, now there will be two.

And on top of that the Spy27 - while it should be finely tuned and balanced, and based on what I have read I would prefer to get it over S30V or S45VN - it is apparently not going to replace these steels (I am guessing the production volume is tiny because only Spyderco orders it, so it will be made in batches here and than contrary to other similar steels that are used by many manufactures + for different purposes as well).

I would really like to see this steel in more production EDC oriented models like Urban, UKPK, Delica, etc. But surely others have different preferences. Maybe I should get myself a Para3 LW (love the knife, just the handle is a tad short for my taste).
... I like weird :bug-red :bug-white-red :bug-white ...

I'm not really interested in super steels. I'm a carrier more then a user. If i use mine once or twice a day for cutting plastic wrapper it's a lot. For my purpose S30V and VG10 is more then enough. I would rather have Spyderco make a batch of 500 plain black, plain steel versions of their knives then 10 exclusives of 50 knives only available thru a US retailer.

when we first heard about spy27, i was pretty excited and thought it might be replacing s30v in the base models. i'd still love to have a g10 manix in spy27, especially in dlc. i do hope we get to see more of it coming out in the future.

I believe Sal mentioned down the line a StretchXL will have SPY27 in a sprint run . I would like to see a sprint Manix 2XL G10 model sprint .

I would like to see at a minimum some Sprint Runs in SPY27. Like LB has said before, some Blue G10 would be cool.

I'll tell you one I would really love. I know they are just getting back up and working on the lightweight version. I know they would probably use VG10. But man, a Caly 3.5 in SPY27 with Blue G10. Ooh mama.

personally, i'd prefer production to sprints. i hate the manufactured emergency of sprints and exclusives. i suppose it's good for business to play on the fomo of consumers, but i hate the whole practice of it almost more than i love the knives it makes available.

Spyderco is indeed over doing it in the steel department. Outside of the pm2/pm3 nothing is even comming out of colorado in g10! I have bin looking to buy another manix2 g10 to customize but just can not find one. They really need to pull production off those exclusives and set ALL on regular production for the time needed to get everything back in stock. And i know i am kicking some people in bad places now but it would be even better if they would learn from those exclusives they made.
Quit making them and make real sprint runs like they use to and then Fans all over the world can buy them instead of mostly Scalpers buying them all up and letting them rot in there boxes because they ask triple the amount for them!

i would possibly grab a lw if it had screws and the magnacut m2lw salt wasn't already on the horizon.

Of course I'm Biased as it's my baby, but we do have plans for SPY27. The next release will be the Mule Team Standard. Slightly different in pattern, but the same scales and sheath. This was the results of Mule Team customers asking for a standard Mule that would be available all of the time. Using SPY27 was my call for the piece and we're also planning on a serrated version.

SPY27 is,in my opinion, a well rounded USA made daily user capable of getting a very sharp edge in the realm of tool steels. Fairly easy to restore the edge as well. We do plan to use it widely, both in Golden and overseas. SPY27 is more expensive so we're not likely to replace any standard steels with it.

I see some models listed above for the steel. I would like to hear which models you would like to see with the steel?

Sal, I would love a Li'l Native LW back lock, Li'l Native back lock G10, UKPK, Endura, Dragonfly, and Delica and a Military 2. That's it for me.

I'd like to see it in the Native Chief LW, Stretch 2 XL, and Military 2. There seems to be a trend here (for me at least).

i think all of the more popular knives have dedicated followers. most of us would probably like to try it in our favorites. for me, that's a manix, but it would be cool in other models as well. it might be nice to have it in something like the lil native slipit or ukpk so people in more restrictive environments would be able to try it out as well.

Here in Texas I can pretty much carry anything I want—but I have an affinity for the slipits, they’re what I choose to carry most of the time. I’d love to see Spy27 in a lil native slipjoint and/or the UKPK.
