Brothers from another mother: Polestar & Manix 2

#1

Post by JRinFL »

Here are a couple of pictures of my new Polestar next to my favorite Manix 2. If you like the size of the Manix 2 and the lock of the Military, give the Polestar a chance. I don't usually push the value line for my own reasons, but it is still a Spyderco.

Oh wow! Thanks for the comparison. In the last catalog, the polestar really stood out to me. I want to try it. This picture helps a lot!

very interesting. i don't think i'd seen these two together ever. the polestar has a little bit more edge as well. i'm not sure anything will ever unseat the manix as my favorite knife, but that looks like a nice knife.

Also looks to be just a tad lighter than the G10 Manix even with the extreme skelonitized liners.

It’s amazing how little attention this knife gets. Maybe if we can get someone with some juice around here to try one out. Maybe vivi or Evil D? Who else?

The polestar definitely has a nice large handle for those of us with XXL mitts.

Great comparison.

I think I like the fact that there is no secondary choil, love the blade shape, hate the pinky nub.

Still, I think I’d like the ergos better than the Manix.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I wanted to like the Polestar so bad but the ergos just didn’t work for me. The area where the cutout for the hole is was uncomfortable in my hand. It is so deep that the handle ends up feeling too thin under stress. Loved the blade though…

There is definitely more hand room on the Polestar vs the Manix 2. The Manix 2 fits me perfectly, the Polestar gives me room to grow. 😆

Welp...as it turns out, this thread caused me to purchase an Astute. Looked up the Polestar in the catalog, but my eyes kept being drawn to the left. 3-inch edge, 2.7 ounces, 2.5mm blade thickness, liner lock, complimentary forum comments to boot.

One thing led to another, and boom! Tomorrow I'll be the proud owner of a new Astute. Weird how things go, sometimes. ;)

i'm not one to be overly concerned with blade to handle ratios, but the astute almost seems to have more blade than handle. it's a very unique design in the spyderco lineup.

I don't like overly exposed liner locks (I'm more of the Gayle Bradley camp, but others disagree), but the polestar is such a great knife in the hand. Leaf blade and edge all the way to the handle is a winner.

JR, how are you liking the Polestar? Still thinking about this one after it caught my eye in the catalog.

I still like it a lot. It is close to a smaller Military just as Sal envisioned. I have a LOT of knives, so it can be a while before it makes it back into rotation. Maybe I'll put in into my yard work Salt collection? That'd be a pretty good test.

Thanks for the reply. It would good to see what you think after that kind of use.

The polestar is a great design worthy of more love.
But i would not compare it to the manix that is a totally different kind of knife.
A shortend milli is perhaps a better comparison. I would even sooner compare it to the pm2 then to the manix. But it does not matter it is a great design that is pusht a bit to the background by all its bigger brothers.

I only compared it to the Manix as they more or less fit in the same "envelope" as it were. Sal did say his design was meant to be more like a smaller, less expensive Military.

To straighten things out my post was not made to be negative to yours in any way so if it was i am really sorry if it sounded that way. I do want to say i love you’re manix in the picture. What kind of scales or those? :)
