FRN scales Rit Dye

#1

Post by 911rsr »

I really would like to dye my scales ,but I'm worry how the dye will actually hold up, will it fade away and start to see original colour underneath , how deep dye will penetrate actually in FRN, or is the dye just on surface ? Anyone have the experience whit that ?

The dye only goes so deep, so wear and scratches will indeed wear through to the factory color. If you were to dye something black it's not a big deal to just dye it black again, but doing colors will get complicated because dying it a second time may change the color.

The good news is Rit makes a dye remover that works pretty well (for G10 anyway, I've never tried it on FRN). I've dyed my Caribbean a bunch of times and I use the dye remover to take it back to yellow just so I get a lighter color to start with so my end result is more true to color dye I'm using. The dye remover won't take it back to the brand new never dyed color, but it's good enough to start over and dye a different color.

I've had mixed luck. My red dyed salts seem to hold up well. I have one that was dyed blue by knives plus that didn't hold up too well. Going to dye it again and see if I can do better.

I used the "Dyemore" RIT dye on my Para 3 S90V FRN scales - love the knife but didn't really care for the teal. Went to a dark blue ("Mountain Peak" RIT dye recipe). Turned out awesome, and still looks perfect after about a month. We'll see how it holds up - I haven't dropped it on concrete or anything yet.

I think the wear actually looks pretty cool on some models. Other companies charge you for the apocalypse worn out patina look but you can just dye a yellow handles whatever color you want and let wear take it's course.
