Hello everyone,
I have a triangle sharp maker and was wondering whether to use the 20 degree side or the 15 degree side to touch up a Spyderco serrated blade? I haven't needed to do it yet but was wondering for when I do. Of course I know that would be only on the side of the blade with the serrations. The flat side would probably on be a light strop on the fine ceramic bar if I'm not mistaken.
Thanks,
What is the best angle for touching up a serrated blade?

Hi DKeller,
Welcome to our forum.
The 40 degree will give you quicker results. The 30 degree would be better longer term. Read David's thread on teeth. I use 3 strokes on the Triangle fine stone (corner) on the ground side to one stroke on the flat side. The three strokes create a small burr and the one stroke cuts it off. abut 40 strokes should get you sharp. Then do the same thing on the 30 degree for about 50 strokes to cut back the shoulder and thin the edge. Eventually, you will just use the 30 degree to maintain the edge.....3 - 1 is a food formula, but once you understand what going on, with your edge, you may choose your own formula. A 10X - 12X magnifying loupe will accelerate your learning process.

You should check if the 15 degree setting even hits the apex on your particular SE Spydie or just higher up on the blade. If the latter, you have to reprofile your knife first before you can do actual "touch ups" with the 15 degree settlng.
If you do like Sal adviced you, you'll eventually reprofile anyway.
Watch the dvd that comes with the sharpmaker.
Here is a great post by Vivi about sharpening SE, incl. two vids viewtopic.php?f=2&t=84544#p1349519
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

Re: What is the best angle for touching up a serrated blade?
Starting out you may not have a choice, you'll first need to see what angle the serrations are ground at and that will dictate what angle you have to use because it will likely be ground somewhere between 30 and 40, which means the 30 slots will do more of a reprofile than a touch up, and the 40 slots will be doing more of a micro bevel. This isn't true for every knife but it has been for most of mine. Color the bevel with a marker and start on the 30 slots and make a couple passes on fine rods and see where the rods are hitting the bevel. If they're hitting high up on the shoulder of the bevel, you'll have to switch to 40.
