What are yr favorite knives for yardwork, gardening?

#1

Post by bleasure »

I've had this question on my mind for a while now. I do a lot of yardwork for myself and others, and a fair amount of gardening. One of the main reasons I carry a knife, personally, is for this reason during the growing and harvest seasons. I have great non-knife tools for these tasks as well, and lots of experience. But I'm wondering about yours - I've seen posts here or there where folks have discussed using their folders for these purposes, and I want to know more.

What have you found to be the most effective for those of you who use knives in gardening or yardwork, for whatever it is you're doing, whether professionally or in your own homes? Pruning trees or tomato plants, delicate cuts, aggressive hacking, sawing, you name it. What works? What definitely does not?

Any models, blade shapes, edges, grinds stand out? Steels to seek out, or avoid? Sharpening methods or approaches?

I haven't used it for any gardening yet, but I imagine the SpyderHawk would excel at many gardening chores, as would hawkbills in general.

Any Salt knife has worked for me, plain edge or serrated edge.

that's a great point, they're sort of like miniature Bahcos... figure an Atlantic/Rescue would be even moreso, but those blade types would also limit some of what you could do with them

Well, mine's actually an Opinel #8 (SS spearpoint) or a Mora 840 (Clipper)/Companion... but if a Spydie does get the nod, it's usually a PE Pacific Salt.

For years I used a stainless A.T.R., but I just switched to a Tasman Salt SE. I’m about to try a Hawkbill Byrd, which is about the same thing.

My Native 5 Lw with serrations. I had a Tasman I loved but alas that was my practice knife for sharpening serrations and I'm afraid I ruined it. All the better for my serrated knives now though!

I do a bit of gardening and yard work. Really, the best tool for the job isn't often the knife, but the knife is what I have on me often.

Absolute favorite knife is the Police 4 LW K390. It's what I'm usually carrying during the day. Foremost, the cutting edge is looooong. I'm not a bansai master, so itty-bitty work isn't needed. A lot of cutting ability is what I'm looking for. The K390 blade can withstand the abuse of hogging through a branch one moment, then slicing up a tomato that is fresh off the vine for a snack. On that blade, I like to go really coarse, and then maybe stropping it a couple strokes with a stick I made for the purpose. The coarse grind is good for slicing through fibrous materials, like plant stems and twigs.

Honorable mention goes to the Z-Wear Mule. The steel is great because it's hard to damage the edge through normal use. Using a Mule for yard work is fun. It's just not quite as good as the P4.

Any SE Salt fits the bill. First choice would probably be the Spyderhawk H1, but since I don't have that, the Tasman Salt does well also.

I use the LC200N Salt 2 SE wharnie and the H1 Tasman Salt 2 SE.

Once in a while I will use the P'Kal, but I much prefer serrated edge models for yardwork.

Personally I use a Mora 2000. Their scandi grind is insanely sharp and stays sharp which seems like forever. Also for not being H1 or LC200N, it’s extremely rust resistant. As for spyderco, I’m hoping to scoop up a siren soon to try out and hoping a waterway will be released this year at some point

Serrated H1 Pacific Salt, I actually bought it for this specific reason, it's a vine killer!
