Why don't we see more bolsters?

#1

Post by jdw »

Just kind of a random thought but I wonder why we don't see more Spydies with bolsters. Is it cost prohibitive? Does it radically complicate manufacturing? Do most people just not like them? The Schemmp Bowie was recently discontinued and I can't think of any more bolstered Spydies in production. Again, just kind of idle wondering.

Probably all of the above. They push a knife more into the gent's knife category and I'm sure add to manufacturing costs.

I would gladly welcome more bolsters. Buck can still offer them on knives that are much less expensive and more time consuming to make. I cannot see a valid reason for Spyderco not offering them except for perhaps the Glessers do not like them, which I can respect.

Count me in as well. I think they look great on certain knives and would have no problem paying a few extra bucks for something that looks nice and stands out from the rest!

Bolsters once served a purpose, but on modern knives they're usually a superfluous affectation. Spyderco tends to avoid design affectations in favor of pure functionality.

If we are going to settle for the plainest, most practical functionality, I can stick with Sodbusters at under $40 a piece. There is a tipping point were reasons become excuses.

Love bolsters when they're done right, as on the Kiwi, Schempp Persian, and Micro Dyad. When they're done wrong and defaced with visible screws, as on the Sage 4 and Schempp Bowie, they are an abomination.

I can't tell if your post is sarcastic because you didn't actually read any of the above comments, or that you really want the bizarre knife that you describe, or if Jesus told you to be rude today?

I was trying to be lighthearted. Forgive me. Big fan of bolstered knives, own many.
