Whither Nishijin?
Where is the Nishijin Chaparral? I see beautiful Nishijin knives of the past all over the cybersphere and nowhere can I get ahold of the sicey, ergonomically balanced, visually striking knife is that is (would be) the Nishijin Chap.
Re: Whither Nishijin?
I've thought about this before too but I assumed Nishijin was only used on the Japanese models

Re: Whither Nishijin?
I've tried to get Spyderco to bring out some more knives in nishijin in the past, but to no avail. I think they'd have to be Japanese made knives since nishijin is a Japanese product. For the Chaparral, I still want blue pearl or purple pearl Kirinite.

I would like to see an aluminium set of scales for the Chaparral like the PM2 sprint (but not with the very aggressive texturing; it's too much). But I don't see that happening. There are many more interesting materials than aluminium.

Re: Whither Nishijin?
It’s a Japanese product, it will not be used outside of Japan. It refers to the intricate textile weaving process from that district in Kyoto:

The last mention I remember from Sal is that they had quite a bit of the material left (the blue especially I believe), and he was willing to consider another run of something from Japan with those scales. A blue Nishijin Dragonfly would be a nice choice, to accompany the other smaller offerings already made with that material.

Ooh, a blue Nishijin Dragonfly would be an instant buy for me, that would be gorgeous.RadioactiveSpyder wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 9:48 amA blue Nishijin Dragonfly would be a nice choice, to accompany the other smaller offerings already made with that material.
Re: Whither Nishijin?
Blue you say? Isn't that similar to the blue used for the SPY-27 color? Sal said he'd like to do a run of the Endura family in SPY-27. I'm just saying...RadioactiveSpyder wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 9:48 amThe last mention I remember from Sal is that they had quite a bit of the material left (the blue especially I believe)...

Re: Whither Nishijin?
Spy27 blue Nishijin Endura would get my money. Has there ever been a nishijin endura?

A nishijin Manbug would get my money muy pronto. I'd take a Delica, too. The Manbug is the always-with-you knife.

Re: Whither Nishijin?
That’s great to hear Sal, thank you! It certainly would be fun to see a few candidates dressed up in it. For folks that haven’t handled it, it is a wee bit slippery like smooth CF and doesn’t have anywhere near the traction of G10, so it’s really meant for a more classy carry (in my opinion). I love it on the R and the Lum Chinese folders because the ergos are so good on them that the handle shape overcomes some of the slipperiness. It also catches the light in different ways depending on the angle (you can see some depth in it) and different batches have slightly different patterns to them.

So we've had a few suggestions so far. Assuming it's available what model would you want. Seki made. One only.

Re: Whither Nishijin?
Depends on what color you have available - the blue or the black? My vote is for a highly popular model (Dfly or Delica), not for some random oddball model that not many folks would be interested in…
Models so far in Nishijin by color:
Black:
R
Stretch Damascus
Dragonfly
Cricket
Lum Chinese
Blue:
Stretch Damascus
Cricket
Lil’ Lum Chinese
Spin
