To loctite or not?

#1

Post by Rgarbarino »

Question...

I'm putting flytanium scales on a Manix2. I had to drill out one of the scale screws because it stripped out. I tried heat and everything but it would not budge before it rounded out. I have the knife completely apart now waiting for the scales to be delivered tomorrow. I can tell there was both red and blue loctite used and it'a a bear cleaning it all off. When I reassemble is it really necessary to use any loctite at all? If I do it will be all blue. Has anyone ever had screws come loose with no thread locker?

I would use blue on everything. I always do when I remove any screws. They seem to work loose without it.

Yes, I had screws back off and drop out on my PITS. I used blue loctite and still keep a close eye on them. Red is too much, purple too little, blue should be fine.

not saying you shouldn't keep applying blue but out of a 100 plus Spyderco knives I've only had one clip screw on a Dragonfly come loose.

Being married for many years, I use fingernail polish. Been holding several of my guns together for years and works well on all low-stress screws but is still super easy to break loose, clean up and reapply.

I only apply loctite to the pivot and pocket clip screws. Body screws really don't need it imo.

I use blue on all my screws except for Ladybugs and Dragonflies because I've had both pivot D bolts spin and round out the FRN and then I couldn't get them apart at all, so I don't use any thread locker on those.

If I have one of my knives apart for some reason, I typically reassemble with no loctite to start.. 90%+ of the time, this works out just fine for me. If I notice a screw starting to back out, the tiniest little dab of blue (NEVER RED!!) does the trick. Maybe a personal preference thing, but I've always believed in "less is more" when it comes to loctite..

Welcome to the forum Rgarbarino! Let us know how those scales work out on your Manix! :)

I’ll put blue threadlocker on any pivot or scale screw that has backed out once.

Blue thead locker on nearly everything for me...

Advocate body screw walked away once; I needed to contact Spyderco for a replacement.
So it goes.

Tiny little screws don’t need anything more than Loctite 222. It’s purple. :smiling-cheeks

I take my knives apart maybe 2-3 times a year… I use nothing… haven’t had one fall out or strip in more than 2 years!

Thanks for the input and the welcome!

I'm having a helluva time cleaning out the pivot and body spacers. Soaked overnight in laquer thinner, did nothing. Now it's soaking in PB Blaster until I run out and get some acetone. Once it goes back together I doubt it will be coming apart anytime soon.

I have a new PM2 apart as well, no issues on that one. Smoothed out the G10 scales with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper and putting in a titanium backspacer.
