Another version of a 3D Printed Scales

There's not much really you can do to change the profile since the handle dictates that for us. Only difference is indicated and the profile of the grip. Almost all the scales i've seen have the same front. Slight difference to give it another personality.

I'm working on making some scales with some walnut I have laying around and my idea was to follow the front edge of the handle much like you did there. That curve and the Halpern scales and others just looks a little off to my eye with that straight edge right in front of it for the grind. I'm going to try and make mine follow that edge but be just short of it. We'll see.

Only thing about not conforming to the norm scale design - the available pre-made sheaths will not fit properly.

Looking at these scales reminded me that I haven’t seen any printed skills that have some scallops for the horizontal hold for a lot of bushcrafting tasks. Has anyone made any?

Perhaps a printed sheath design could work together with the scale design so that the sheath and the scales clipped together like a puzzle piece of sorts for retention. imagine a tab on the scale that you were depress to release the knife and that tab extend it into the scale I but not exposed to the surface.

I've actually thought about doing such design but the problem I see, the sheath will not be universal and only would work for that particular 3D printed scales. Since you've mentioned it, I will draw something and see if my limited Fusion 360 skills is enough to model a design. I may try to get an SLA 3D printer as my low end FDM printer is limited and have to design according to it's capability.

The scales would be the same except having an area underneath one of the scales that would fit the tab. It would come as a whole package of sheath and scales.

I'm curious to see this project come to fruition. IMHO specialised scale/sheath combinations aren't an issue, when it comes to 3D printing. The beauty of this manufacturing process is the customisation it permits.

That'd be useful for me and I guess for other people as well. (In my case I'll have it printed by a commercial service, so I'll instruct the company to use the recommended printing parameters).
