Busse/Strider Question

#1

Post by Mr Blonde »

Guideseries thread made wonder. How thin are the edges on a typical large Busse/Swamp Rat knife? More importantly, are they compatible with my Sharpmaker?

I never did have a 'user' large FB, and the Busse stuff seems very good, but would it handle the Sharpmaker and vice versa?

And how do Strider 'factory' edges conform to the 40 degree angle on a Sharpmaker? Both the fixed blades and the folders?

Thanks,

Wouter

I Have Some Busses And Have Not Even Tried To Sharpen Them Yet, So All I Can Do Is Report Back When I Do.

On The Strider It Is Perfect, I Had A Decent Chip On My Strider Sng, And The Sharpmaker Cleaned Up The Blade Up Perfect, But If I Remember Correctly I Used The 30 Degree Side. When I Was Done It Made That Blade So Sharp! The Sharpmaker Is A Great Tool.

Wouter, the unoffical Strider FAQ says that all knives are sharpened at 45 degree inclusive. So, that means you would need to set a whole new backbevel on them to sharpen them on the SharpMaker.
I sharpen my Strider PT on a :spyder: benchstone.

Thats Interestin Ted, As The Sharpmaker Seemed To Exactly Match My Sng, Maybe I Did It On 40, But I Think It Was 30, It Seemed To Blend Perfect With The Kinfe, But I Was Not Doing A Full Sharpening Just Blending A Chip.

The 40 works perfectly on my PT.
40 also work on my Busse BA-E but its a little harder to touch up because of the asemetrical (SP?)edge, the Busse holds an edge so well that most of the time all that is needed is a lick or 2 on a ceramic stck.

I think strider uses a 22.5 degree bevel.

20 is close enogh for a the sharpmaker.

Steelhed, over on BFC, used to use a Sharpmaker for his Busses. I think he uses a Hand-American system now. I've sharpened a Swamp Rat Howling Rat on the Sharpmaker and it used the 30 degree setting with no problem.
