Any less linered than a Delica 4 and it’s a no go for me…it doesn’t have to be as solid as the original but I am not going to buy it if it is linerless FRN

Is this a normal lightweight style of construction for Spyderco?Meadowlark wrote: ↑Thu Nov 25, 2021 9:52 pmI think full skeletonized liners with frn scales would be great and still qualify the model as lightweight.
Any agreement?

Hi Sal,
Appreciate the welcome and your classic designs.
Any word on the liners for the LW Caly 3.5?

My FRN Chaparral has nested/embedded liners and I love it.
My FRN Caly Jr has no nested/embedded liners and I love it.
Let Spyderco engineers decide.

Yes to that.

Yes to that too.cabfrank wrote:Yes to that.
And as an addition:
I think the Chap is an (the only??) FRN Spyderco that actually NEEDS liners. It is so thin (generally and the FRN slabs themselves) that it would not have enough structural integrity and stability without liners. The Chap is not built for light weight, but a bit for extremely thin profile, while still having an (actually very) sturdy built.
Most other FRN Spydies technically don´t NEED liners imho. No problems with the Para 3 LW, the Manix 2 LW (yes, I know, FRCP not FRN), the Salts, the Native 5 LW, ...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Aren't the delica 4's marketed as lightweight? They have full skeletonized liners or at least mine does..

Ah, good point. "Stimmt!"

They are lightweight, even with the liners. The versions before the Delica 4 did not have liners, though. Both versions are lightweight, compared to the stainless steel-handled Delicas.

Thanks Jim, that's what I thought but wasn't sure.James Y wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 10:56 amMeadowlark wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 5:55 amAren't the delica 4's marketed as lightweight? They have full skeletonized liners or at least mine does..

I own both the saber ground Delica 4 frn and the Salt 2 frn in H1 SE (Delica 4 platform) which are both great but the Salt 2 linerless design flexes more than I'd like when cutting strenuously and especially horizontally against something.
In contrast, the fully linered frn Delica 4 doesn't seem to have as much flex/movement in the same situation; I'm hoping the Caly LW is linered like the Delica 4.
Thoughts?
Excited for the Caly rerelease.

Bumping this back up.
Re: Caly 3.5 Light Weight: Any News?
I haven’t seen anything recently but it’s my most anticipated knife so I’m all ears if anyone else has heard anything. I’d love to know where in line this project is as the line is obviously moving slower due to the global supply issues.
Para Military 2, Sage 1, Sage 5 LW, Manix 2 LW Translucent Blue, Delica 4 LW FFG, Delica 4 LW Wharncliffe 20CV (KnifeJoy), Persistence, Resilience, Bow River, Stretch 2 XL SE, UKPK Salt, UKPK Drop Point Red G10 (Heinnie Haynes), Caribbean SE, Spydiechef, Endura 4 Wharncliffe, Endela, Salt 2 (RIP - Galveston Bay), Dragonfly 2 Salt SE (RIP - Gulf of Mexico), Centofante III (sold)
Re: Caly 3.5 Light Weight: Any News?
Either way - liners or no liners - one I will be checking out and likely buying.

Same. Love the 3.5 and while the Astute has been giving it some stiff competition I will still be getting whatever new variants are in the offering.

Re: Caly 3.5 Light Weight: Any News?
My CF Caly 3.5 is a beauty, the San Mai ZDP is without a doubt, the sharpest factory edge I've ever had. To be honest, the edge is better than most of those I've sharpened. I'd love an FRN version in either K390 or MagnaCut. Such a beast might just replace my Endela as my EDC.

Re: Caly 3.5 Light Weight: Any News?
After handling my fair share of Spyderco FRN models, I am pretty firmly in the linerless camp. The weight reduction, and the improved balance makes me reach for my linerless models much more often. Handle is still plenty rigid. There are certain models where liners make sense, but for edc knives, I prefer linerless.
Re: Caly 3.5 Light Weight: Any News?
That's been my experience as well. The only possible downside is that these can sometimes be less fidgety, but that's not a real concern of mine, but will bother some folk.Baron Mind wrote: ↑Tue Jan 25, 2022 3:17 pmAfter handling my fair share of Spyderco FRN models, I am pretty firmly in the linerless camp.
