Compression lock silent opening

#1

Post by damiand »

Hello.

As everyone knows, I am the owner of a Chaparral, it has a lock back and it allows me to do silent opening if I keep the lock pressed while opening it. I would like to know if I can do the same with a compression lock or if a "lock back model" is necessary. I have never had a compression lock knive so I am wondering if this can be done.

Yes, even easier than the lock back models. Many of us are concerned about your continued focus on silent opening.

you should probably be focused on opening a knife without cutting yourself instead of opening it without sound.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

I'm gonna get out ahead of this one and say if you buy a knife with a compression lock, it's going to cut the crap out of you, you'll make 3 threads asking if the safety of the knife can be somehow avoided, and further complicate your already staggeringly complex knife situation. The thought of a free swinging blade just sounds like a bad idea here.

Almost all of my comp locks squeak when opened. If I put it to my ear it sounds like a screaming goat hit by a truck when it locks. :shush

I wouldn't be able to hear it, but others who have lived a more sheltered life probably could. So when you're trying to creep up on an unsuspecting victim, I suggest you stalk old guys who have lived lives shooting the biggest guns, banging their heads against he wall of sound, and running their engines uncorked at full throttle.

Damiand, I own one compression lock knife, a PM2. It’s one of the few knives I haven’t had to tune.

With the lock disengaged the blade swings through it’s 180deg arc silently even with my ear against the scales. The only noise is the clack of the lock engaging and you can stop that by holding the lock bar back till the knife is open then releasing it.

Probably a chuckle at some good people's expense.

None of that is so bad.

I’ve never had a problem with people laughing at me, plus no one’s ever likely to laugh at me more than I laugh at myself.

Maybe it reached that point, but many people including Sal went above and beyond in the beginning and gave more than a benefit of doubt about language barriers and such being the issue. There seemed to be a total disregard of advice, just look at the Sharpmaker questions in particular. I don't think all of that can be blamed on a language translator.
