3 new Lil Natives

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

I have to say that I was surprised at the Lil Native offerings. I have been wanting a Dragonfly in Magnacut, but seeing that Lil Native Light Weight changed my mind. THAT would be perfect in Magnacut. But that is beside the point. I have been moving to smaller knives as I get older and I have a Lil Native that is in rotation. However, these new offerings are pretty enticing. The LW with the thinner blade stock and thinner handle is already a winner in my book and a have-to-have knife.

I like the idea of the slip joint version. I'd first like to know how the action is, especially since it has no half stop. This could be the knife that takes the Urban out of my pocket, but we'll see.

Now, that wicked looking wharncliffe model....this is the best looking wharncliffe currently in production and though I am not a big fan of detent dependent knives in my pocket, I am going to have to buy one of these. That is one very cool knife.

Personally, I prefer heavier knives so the lightweight versions are always a downgrade imo, although i fully appreciate the industrial design aspect of the frn molds. I’m also disappointed that jimping reappeared on the lightweight, it was and is a delight to enjoy (mostly) jimp-free lil Ns (save the 3 jimps on the CL versions), i understand that Spyderco is trying to please everyone all the time, and may
we all get what we want. As long as its jimp free. Henry, I’m looking at you-

I’d certainly welcome MagnaCut in the Little Big Knife that is the Lil’Native. I think this promising steel would be wasted in other small Spydies.

I've ignored the line due to the size, but something about the slipjoint version has my interest. Maybe it's the lack of a half stop or no thumb ramp. I think if I ever decided to carry a really small knife again, the lil native would be the first I'd try.

The slip joint is a clean looking knife. I like jimping on the lil native, never understood why they left it off.

I got to handle a regular current-production Lil Native with a compression lock a little while back. I liked the ergonomics quite a bit, but didn't love the compression lock, the thick bladestock, or the G-10. I like G-10 in the hand, but don't like its pocket-shredding. So in the pocket - it was pocket-shreddy when using the clip, but a bit heavy to drop in loose.

So I was thinking; if they made a Lil Native in FRN with a backlock, I'd probably be on-board. Now we have the FRN backlock coming, with no liners - and with a thinner bladestock to boot!

This one is on my radar for something to split time with my Dragonfly.

I agree the Wharncliffe is the best looking one Spyderco offers. I think it is because there is no hump to accommodate the Spydie hole on the Lil Native. I will be eagerly awaiting a backlock version and will make purchase of it instantly. I will also be buying the LW simply because it has a true deep carry pocket clip.

if they do a magnacut lil native lw salt, it's going to be hard for me to pass on. i've been wanting a lil native for a while, but i've passed because i don't really need it. i may still pass until they do a comp lock lw, but even a backlock would be tough to ignore for me.

The Lil' Native LW is the most excited I've been about a new knife/model since the Dragonfly went to FFG.

I like that a more slender version is going to be available. Always thought the lil native to be a bit of a fat cat.

Has anyone noticed that the Wharnie LN has a slight negative angle to it?

I'm even more excited as it may prove to be an even more capable EDC slicer compared to the original!

i think i prefer the tuff lite because the blade is lower relative to the grip than this one looks.

Any word on the blade stock thickness on the LW? I haven’t seen it mentioned yet.

That Lil Native lightweight succeeds in finally making me interested in the platform...

In the vid it looks like it will have clearly thinner blade stock than the current versions (and actually Eric confirms that), I figure it will at least be reduced to the 2.5 mm of the Dragonfly (chapp-ish 2.0 would be great of course).
Also the weight just has to be a lot lower and also get down in the DFly realm...

A bit more cutting edge, no ramp (which I do prefer in such small models) and presumably the great native-family-backlock could make it the "better DFly" for me.

Currently my tiny knife is the Chap, and my superlight one the Salt.

But should I consider tiny AND superlight some day: I´d probably go Lil Native LW and not DFly
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I've handled the compression lock lil' native and found it to clumsy for my big mitts. I've had the backlock version in and out of my cart numerous times but having never handled one, I never pulled the trigger. The slipjoint is a definite buy for me as soon as they are available...now I just need to find someone to make replacement Ti scales for it.

The lightweight is interesting to me because it’s a lockback, my hands would be too big though to operate the Wharnie which sort of reminds me of the QBall . MG2

I really like the wharnie, that'll be my first Lil Native for sure. That'll be a stout little utility knife.
