I want a 4” Spydiechef
I want a 4” Spydiechef
Sal,
Please make a 4-5” Spydiechef. It would expand the range of a great knife into a VERY useful tool.
Please. Pretty please with sugar on top.
I carved an entire thanksgiving turkey with a 4.25” Voyager. Please give me that same versatility with the Spydiechef.
Cleaning fish, field dressing, slicing veg; yes, you can get it done with a 3” blade, but just that little bit of extra length makes it a much easier task.

Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
A while back I asked for not just a larger version but also a FRN lightweight version to keep cost down, to make it a more viable folding food prep tool. Unfortunately it seems people are far more interested in this model for the titanium pocket jewelry aspect than for it's function. I'd go all in and make it 5 inches, at least long enough to slice an average sized tomato.

Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
Seems like a good idea. I'd be in depending on price, David's FRN version might be a good idea, but the FRN molds usually need to sell a lot of knives of the normal version to make happen.
I picked up a Chokwe because some person on here said they used it for some light duty food cutting. It might be a good option, but it definitely doesn't have the great angles the Spydiechef does. Police 4 FRN is probably the best.

Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
I always wonder why food prep people don't just bring something cheap and simple, like a Z Cut knife along with them when they plan on using a knife on food. Cheap, plenty of cutting edge, no problems with gunk in the pivot and what not. Problem solved.

Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
Agreed. Why would I want to spend hundreds of dollars on food prep knife that is already sub-par for the job being a folder? And if you really have to use a folder, Victorinox makes a very inexpensive food prep folder.

Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
You don’t eat?
I’ve got tons of knives. Well, close to a ton.
What I want while camping is a lightweight knife that does a lot of different thing well. I love that Spydiechef… in concept. I even gave it a lanyard with titanium bead that has tritium. But really, it just sits there waiting to do something because I have other knives that do other things better.
A larger Spydiechef with that same corrosion resistant steel would just be in the Goldilocks zone.
Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
The Victorinox is a good steak knife and bread cutter. It’s way to flexible for use as a paring knife. I have no idea why the say that in the marketing. I keep mine in the truck and use it at restaurants too cheap to give you a good steak knife.
Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
I would like a 5" version too. The open construction of the Ti slabs makes it very easy to keep hygienic.
I like cutting food with folding knives because I need to cut food every day and it gives me excellent real world feedback on how a blade performs.
I cut lots of meat and vegetables with my current version. I find it a bit short for larger onions or tomatoes though.
And vs. a nice kitchen knife like a Murray Carter I never have to worry about someone else in the house using it to pry open jars, cut apart blister packs or chucking it point first into a sink full of water.

Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
I get and respect your arguments, but on the other hand: If one follows through on your logic, at what point is an EDC knife obsolete anyway?
- Why don´t people always bring a box cutter when opening packages and processing cardboard?
- Why don´t people always use scissors for cutting of threads and stuff like that?
- Why do people make fire or cut a walking stick with their EDC folder and don´t bring a larger scandi grind fixed blade?
- And so on..
What I am trying to say:
- Even our best EDC folders are very often "subpar for the/a job" than a cheaper, but dedicated for that specific cutting task (cutting) tool would be!
- Many here do and enjoy to do other "dirty", risking-gunk-in-the-pivot jobs aside of food prep with their Spydies (I certainly do!)
For me a big part of the fun, fascination and joy this hobby brings exactly IS to have a great, universal, do-it-all folder in pocket, that still will be "master of none".
And experience and getting to know its capablities, pros, cons, and limits in as much and as varying tasks as possible.
/ That said, there are also a practical side to food prep of folders:
- If one is a lot on the road like me (bike, car, on foot) when working or in the outdoors when not, the folder in the pocket actually often IS the best tool available for food prep (and knives like the Endura do an amazing job then)
- Sometimes I am in the kitchens of friends, and my folder definitely is the sharpest and best for food prep knife there...
- Cutting food with various folders is a really good way to compare theit blades, grinds and so on...
/ Last thing: I think THIS forum is not at all about always looking for the "cheapest and most simple" solution anyway...

Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
My personal opinion: There can be something like OVERLY hygienic.
I never, ever had any problems when let´s say first cutting wood, or cardboard or what not, getting the knife dirty, than wipe off the blade (or rinse it, if I can) and cut food afterwards. In actually think this is rather healthy, has always been natural for human beings and good for the immune system (and to be clear: I am not a filthy guy. Normally shower twice a day, change my shirts at least each day and so on... )

Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
Welcome to the forum!
People here quite often wish for a larger (or smaller) version of a folder.
In case of the Spydiechef larger would actually really make sense imho, since this has advantages in food prep indeed,
And for people who plan on doing food prep with their folders occasionally or even often, the Chef´s platform might be best suited in Spydercos linup.

Re: I want a 4” Spydiechef
This is Inching towards the same type of logic that anti pocket knife people use against us.
Why don't pocket knife people just bring along scissors for :insert hundreds of things here:
Why don't pocket knife people just bring along a utility knife for that cardboard box
Why don't those pocket knife people just bring along a seatbelt cutter
It goes on and on because a pocket knife is a compromised cutting tool, it is a jack of all trades tool meant to take the place of as many cutting tools as possible. Dogging on guys for cutting their food makes the same amount of sense as doing the same for cutting up a box instead of using a utility knife.
Besides, if you really want to see just how well your knife slices and just how sharp it is, go slice a tomato as thin as possible. If you get gunk in the pivot....well, see the title and entire point of this thread because the goal is to avoid exactly that issue. This is why nobody is doing food prep with a Ladybug and why people keep asking for a longer blade version of the SpydieCHEF which sort of implies something in the name doesn't it? It's not a SpydieBOXCUTTER or SpydieMAILOPENER or SpydiePICMATERIALFORINSTAGRAM now is it?
