S45VN

Post by Hullk »

Now that the para 3 and para military 2 standard versions are being produced in S45VN instead of S30V, can we expect other models to do the same? I'm talking about the Shaman, Kapara, and Smock.

I can't think of any model outside the big ones with in-house designs that have changed steels over time without a full model change. I would guess of those three, the Shaman is the only one with a chance.

I hope the Chief and the Military will go straight to MC.

I wonder how affordable MC will be? I think it will be closer to the S110V offerings than S45VN

I posted a similar topic recently. The answer seems to be that they'll cross that bridge when they get there. There don't seem to be current plans to switch more models over from S30V to S45VN but anything is possible. That's something I like about Spyderco and keeping an eye out for "casual bombshells" from Sal is fun.

I still haven't tried S45VN but between Knife Steel Nerds and other sources, I'm definitely interested.

I'd love to see S45VN, SPY27, or S110V as a more stainless alternative to XHP on the Chaparral.

There is no reason for it to be expensive, IIRC Larrin wrote something to this effect.

Replacing S30V in some regular production models with S45VN has only happened for G-10 models of ParaMilitary2 and Para3. The rest is speculation.

Here’s what Michael Janich said back on July 20, 2021:

Hey, All:

As announced in the 2021 catalog, the standard-production Para Military 2 and G-10-handled Para 3 families are transitioning from CPM S30V to CPM S45VN. That's it. I'm not sure where "the word on the street" is coming from regarding a wholesale move away from S30V, but it's unfounded.

Stay safe,

Mike

I know there has been a lot of talk about two other steels: SPY27 and MagnaCut. Let’s see what the next Reveal has in store.

Yeah, the magic isn't in the ingredients like it is with S110V. It's in the proportions.

Well, if they release the Shaman in s45, I guess I'll be buying another Shaman. Other than that, S30V works just fine...otherwise I wouldn't have 2 S30v shamans! Haha!

I'd happily pay s110v prices for Magnacut. I hope that Larrin is getting a decent commission on the magna cut sales, and I'm happy to help reward him for developing it, and to pay for a larger profit margin for Spyderco for using it in a production knife.

Thanks RamZar, this pretty much answers all of the OP's questions in regards to S30V.

Now what about S35VN? Does it have any future in the Spydiverse at all, with S30V and S45VN, plus SPY27 and MagnaCut aka Larrinite?

I would definitely like to support everyone. I hope Larrin gets justly rewarded for giving us an awesome steel. Would love to see a Shaman in Magnacut.

Spyderco went back to S30V from S35VN on the Native5 a few years ago.

So, most of you folks seem to be reasonably pleased about the coming of S45VN? I guess I just haven't caught the 45 fever yet. I wish someone would talk me into it. I'm sure it's good; maybe if it had been introduced a year ago I'd have gotten on board a little faster. Not sure what it offers above and beyond SPY27. A bit more corrosion resistance, maybe?

I thought that SPY27 was supposed to be highly corrosion resistant? I would have thought better corrosion resistance than S45VN, though the latter’s corrosion resistance is supposedly improved over both S30V and S35VN.
