Anyone bought a Cat lately?

#1

Post by araneae »

I just purchased 2 Cats, both dealer engraved for my employees who were recently promoted, both have very thin handle scale edges on the clip side where they are chamfered toward the thumb hole. Both are much thinner than my Cat and one is actually chipped. I noticed immediately when I opened it as the edge feels quite sharp.

Definitely a disappointment, and I will now have to see about a return and a bit of a delay on the congratulatory gift giving. Has anyone else picked up a Cat lately? Anyone else have an uber thin G-10 edge? I'll try to add some images later.

That is disappointing. The Cat is one of my favorite Spydercos.

I've been tempted to pick up a BD1N version, maybe I'll have to do that sooner than later to see how it looks on arrival.

The G-10 edge thickness of the new Cats is at 0.2mm versus 0.5mm thick on my older model. It really is quite thin.

Yeah those don't look right, especially the one with the chip in it. That actually looks like it will inevitably get worse with normal wear and tear. It doesn't exactly seem like a change from CQI, so I would guess it's just a manufacturing defect that slipped through QC.

I think Spyderco would be happy to help fix or replace them.

Wow. Definitely doesn't look right. For $9 more would a Dragonfly 2 be a consideration? Or are you looking for g10 specifically.

One of the two young ladies already has a Dragonfly. I may have given her the Spydie bug, so I went for the Cat. I am waiting for DLT to respond. I am concerned that the whole batch may be overly thin and will have them check. Figures, the only time I get something engraved for gifting there is an issue...

Somebody was careless when they made that knife. I'd send it back.

Still waiting on DLT to respond, they are crazy fast shippers, a tad slower on service response time. I'm hoping they'll check their other stock to find decent ones and swap both out for me. Sadly both gifts will be several days late at a minimum.

Well, DLT got me a replacement for the chipped knife and returned the other to me. Took a bit longer than I wanted or was told for them to turn it around and the gifts are nearly 2 weeks late.

The new knife is similarly thin. I'll check it with a micrometer and update later (it's .3mm on the replacement, still .2 thinner than my older Cat). I guess this how they're coming from the factory these days. I probably won't buy another until that changes.

I still wish they'd re-add the jimping. Polls here have shown a clear majority of people are pro-jimping.

When I was scanning through recent threads my brain read this as "Anyone bought a Cat Lady?" That gave me pause.

Anyway, on topic... I have no experience with the Cat. But it looks like a handy little pocket knife.

It is a great knife. You should buy one, though I am speaking from the experience of an older knife. I assume Spyderco is now looking into the thin G10 issue since it was raised in this thread.

I have a fairly recent production Cat in BD1N. Fit and finish on mine is that of a much more expensive knife. Action was amazing, and razor sharp right out the box. Truly a poor man's
Lil Native. I have both and carry both, and when held in the hand, the Cat feels closer in quality to the Lil Native than the doubled price tag might indicate. I have often wondered why the newer Cat in BD1N does not get more love around here. ???

I have one and this is pretty much how I feel about it. It seems that the lack of love around here might be attributed to the BD1N blade, but only guessing. :thinking
