How can people do it?

I sharpen my brothers knives ever since I bought them both Spydercos. The last time was not even 2 weeks ago but they somehow manage to do this kind of damage as they say "just using the knife." First two are a Tenacious 8cr and the last two are a Cat in Bd1. (there's some fuzz on the bottom pic that looks like a crack)

I sharpened my dad's Native the other day and it was completely blunt and chipped to heck... He swore up and down it wasn't dull and i showed him how before sharpening it wouldn't cut paper and after it would and he still claimed it wasn't dull to begin with...

The Tenacious 8cr doesn't hold up well for me. Can't say much for the others you mentioned, I've never used them. I have several other steels that do much better.
And yes...that looks like normal use as far as I'm concerned.

Probably prying, twisting, and/or banging the blade while cutting something that's laying on a hard surface, like brick or concrete; or maybe hitting and scraping the edge against something metallic, like staples in cardboard.

My dad is slowly starting to listen, but he’s already responsible for the death of one spyderco I gifted him and there isn’t an edge or steel on the planet that’ll survive a day at his job and come back sharp. At least not to the standards of the users here.

He builds really nice docks for the wealthy people crowding up the Florida coastlines, so if the abusive cutting doesn’t kill the knife’s edge the saltwater and sand will.

Bit off topic, but if you plan on swimming near Tampa Bay any time soon, I’d hold off. There’s some severe Red tide that’ll probably be permanent at this point since the pollution is so bad.

I started my dad off with a Dragonfly and the blade was way too thin for his prying and screwdriver uses for knives so I gave him the Native and at least the blade is thicker so he can't snap the blade on this one (yet) lol.

When I see people using a glass cutting board I have to leave the room lol I can feel the edge dying

The Tenacious cuts boxes and nylon pallet strapping all day. If I had to guess on the Cat's damage its probably from prying interior trim apart in his truck and cutting copper wires.

I've done my share of damage but all of it was during testing like here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=88347 . The only one I ever regretted was testing edge stability on S110V@15dps using a brass rod. It was the first time doing it and I had only tested CPM Cruwear before doing the S110V. In the impact test the apex just flattened out so I thought it could take it but I must have went at the wrong angle because it chipped. Lesson learned, leave that kind of testing to people with more knives than you. This picture is from a usb microscope, I think it was <1mm wide.

Yeah, I'm like that, and that's why I'm very selective about which of my skills I might offer to others. When someone takes a blade that I've sharpened for them and chops up hotdogs in a cast iron frying pan, it's MY fault if I get all butthurt. It's their knife, and if they don't care about the edge, that's their business. If they ask me to sharpen a knife for them in the future, it's perfectly ok for me to politely decline.

Yes, the above example is real, and yes, I'm still a little irked. But I'm TRYING to be less intolerant.

My "sharpening for friends" is adjusted to suit the skills and care with which the knife will be used... abusers and those who are oblivious get sharp blades with quick/coarse edges, those who exercise care and who respect their blades get my best work.

Well, I don't want to be sarcastic and I do absolutely respect every way people might enjoy or use their knives.

But I have to say: Using/abusing an 8CR Tenacious a bit too hard sometimes is something I personally understand a lot better than owning perfect work knives in great steels (let's say Crucarta Shaman or REX 45 sprints) and not really using them at all or just carefully for light tasks in order not to even scratch them up a bit...

As said I totally respect if one wants to just collect knives! But I personally am much closer to the "using my folders for everything perhaps a bit recklessly sometimes " end of the scala. Especially when it comes to perfect work horse sorints like the HAP40 Stretch or the REX 45 Manix..

That being said: What I don't really understand is how people are not bothered when their knives get that dull and why they don't want to learn just the basics of how to sharpen...

Well, I will confess to being a heretic. I have happily used knives to cut things that they shouldn't have been cutting. It is usually that there was nothing else to use at the moment. The knife is always handy so it gets called into service. The blades got eaten up and had to be resharpened to eventually get the chips or rolls out. I'm not sorry. I'd do it again. So there! :D :D :D

One of the worst situations is a non knife AFI who is given a "good knife" and thinks that since it's a good knife he can use it even harder than that trashy folder he got from AutoZone, so he really leans on it because a "good knife" should be able to take it, right?

Things need to get cut. That's what pocket knives are for? It's not just cardboard and packaging. Sometimes the thing you need to cut off is on a metal backing (big wad of duct tape over the end of a piece of rebar) - you can be careful, but you're most likely gonna make contact

Since I LOVE sharpening, having brothers like yours would be a blessing for me :D

I am not against abusing knives that way at all. I try not to forget that knives are just pieces of steel with a handle meant to be tools. They are sharpened, used/abused and resharpened again (with the joy that it provides to sharpening junkies like me). When the blade has been sharpened so many times that it has lost half of its width ... one has the perfect excuse to buy another knife. Isn't the perfect world? :rolleyes: :D

I once watched a friend who bragged about how sharp he kept his knives using his pocket knife to cut off Teflon tape he was putting on pipe threads. He had to saw through it. Some people don't know what sharp is. Most people have never used a really sharp knife in their lives, and they usually hurt themselves the first time they do.
