Need help! Dropped my Salt 2 H1 and....

#1

Post by islandpar »

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Spyderco and the forum. My first Spyderco knife (not counting the Byrd) and current EDC is a Salt 2 with H1, I also have a PM2 with G10 in digital camo and a coming PM3 LW...I know, I'm starting to be a Spydercoholic - next in line is either the Ronin 2 or the Yojimbo 2.

Unfortunately, I dropped my Salt 2 in a bad way, it was closed but when it dropped, it somehow flipped open and started to bounce "head over heel", the tip and the blade sides hitting hard surface before stopping.

I bought a Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker, set at 40 degrees and followed the instructions on the manual. It's actually my first time to use this and I only sharpen kitchen knives with an accusharp knife and tool sharpener before or the usual sharpening stone. The end result are seen in the pics below.

I know...it looks bad, any way I can make it better, using the same Sharpmaker or the accusharp? What did I do wrong, using the sharp maker? How do I get the tip back to its original look?

I really have a lot to learn about sharpening and would appreciate your inputs. Thank you in advance. Stay safe and healthy everyone!

First, get a magic marker/sharpie and color the edge so you can see where you are hitting. Second, I would personally use the 30 degree slots. H1 should be easy to work with.

Looks like a work knife, if it cuts well I wouldnt worry about how it looks.

Just practice your sharpening.

Use the brown rods at 20 degrees to quickly restore the edge.

Use a technique like this to sharpen the tip if normal sharpening doesn't already fix it:

Looks like it has survived well to me. Now it's time for sharpening practice.

Hi Islandpar,

Welcome to our forum. It should clean up nicely with the sharpmaker. 30 degree to clean up and use. Some like a 40 degree micro-bevel. I just use the 30.

Plenty of great advice already, I’ll just add that in terms of aesthetics it looks like you didn’t spend enough time on one grit level to fully erase the scratch pattern from the previous one. That’s how you get that ugly splotchy pattern.

I was pretty excited to sharpen this guy last night, but low on time so I did it the same way. The edge is ugly, but it’s slicing like a beast today.

If you are not skilled, the solution is a guided system (Lansky, KME, etc)

Look at the edge that even a clumsy like me can get ... :o :D

Ah, thank you!!

Anyway OP, it’s not the clearest picture but you can see places along the bevel where it’s reflecting light differently because there’s still some of the previous scratch pattern.

Thank you everyone! I tried Doc Dan's and Sal's advice to use the 30 deg and I've seen improvements, still much to do and learn and I once again thank everyone for their suggestions, words of wisdom and encouragement . Will continue to practice and develop sharpening skills.

Stay safe and healthy everyone
