Sad thing about that is, quality control is performed in Golden, so Spyderco must have thought that they all looked acceptable as-is from the maker.JRinFL wrote: ↑Thu Jun 03, 2021 11:55 amRaffir, just like wood, needs someone to cull the pieces that that look less than stellar. Based on what I saw of the many Raffir Chaps posted on forums, the maker seemed to use every piece no matter how it looked. Raffir is not G10 or Micarta, it needs sorting before use on a knife. Apparently this is a lost art in cutlery these days.
Who wants more models with raffir noble scales?

I agree about Kirinite, but it would depend on the kind. The grey smoke stuff looks great, but some of the multicolored materials can look pretty wacky.
Surprised to hear about it chipping.
Passing up the umpteenth RN Chapparal over on knife_swap is actually what triggered this post. I've only seen a one or two underwhelming scales out of the ten or so listings I checked.
I have seen a similar sort of variation on Hogue's g-mascus. My Ex04 has a very cool button side and comparatively boring clip side. Definitely some selection and culling going on.
