Diamond Arc texture. Pros and Cons.

#1

Post by MrMatnenko »

All spyderco fans, have a good day!
I'm a new spyderco fan, and my first spyderco was PM2 s45vn Diamond Arc Forest Green. Then, I paired it with PM2 s90v DLC OD scale. For me, this combo is perfect! I can carry one , with diamond texture, then grab s90v with a bit smoother texture, and it feels like new and fresh experience under my fingers.
Friend of mine is going to sell his new PM 2 s45vn Diamond Arc, and I can't help eager to get one more, knife with this scale texture.
So the question is for more seasoned spyderco fans, does this texture have collection or EDC value, or its just my obsession , like, 'first love'.
p.s. want to add some background, I'm in Ukraine, where knife culture is not much developed as in US, and I have no idea will I be able to sell it , in case..

Teared up pockets guaranteed unless you sand the surface where clip touches the scales which will reduce resale price

PM2s are still liked by many.
S90V is nice steel. Diamond arc is quite new.
I do not know if there will be more.

Selling should work well.

I recommend using and enjoy.
You will not able to get it back easily.

I never had a diamond arc textured Spydie (there was only the PM2 and Para 3 sprints with this scales, right?), but I figure I´d prefer the smoother G10 personally.

Now normally I´d say: If the S45VN "diamond" PM2 really is your favorite folder it can´t hurt to get a backup, since it is a sprint run and not easily to be found.
But since you say the two PM2s are your very first Spydercos: Another way to look at it would be to invest your money in some different model(s) to try other blade shapes, lock types, ergos, handle materials... ? Something like a Manix (G10 or LW), Stretch 2, Endela, Shaman, Rock Jumper would roughly be in the same size category as a PM2, or you try how you like carrying and using something smaller (Delica, Sage, Para 3, Chaparral...) or larger (Military, Endura, Chief...) ?
Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endela SE (VG10), Manix 2 LW (REX45)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1)

This is from light or non textured scales under the clip, such aggressive texturing like diamond arc or Cold Steel’s G10 texture can do even worse

I think Spyderco needs to explore more machined scale textures in general. The world has enough plain peel ply G10 to last the rest of time.

Oh man... your pics show just the very beginning of what folders do to pockets when one uses and puts them in and out (the folders) a lot... ;)

Most of my pants pockets got totally torn by constant knife "in and out" (really with holes and everything) and have already sewn patches over the destroyed areas (in the pic for example two larger patches on the climbing pants left and right, and a smaller one on the jeans in the middle). And the patches start to wear off themselves already... :D

... generally ( but this gets debated quite a bit!) I personally find Spydercos FRN knives to be the most pocket friendly: Not because textured FRN would be "gentle", but due to the smooth (NON textured) spot on the handle on which the clip lands. THIS is the area where there is real pressure and friction when drawing the knife, and this spot is a lot rougher on most G10 folders in my experience.
