Serrated edge fans

#1

Post by Stoney87 »

Those of you who carry serrated, or those that don’t but know their steel, what steel lends itself better to serrated edges from spyderco? I have been considering picking one up, just for something different to tryout. But from some light reading, and probably inaccurate memory, it seems some steels perform much better as a serrated edge? I’m not horribly knowledgeable on steels, but would larger carbides be a positive for serrated edges?

There are those on this forum that have vastly much more experience than I with Spydie edges, but I must say that I am mightily impressed with the LC200N serrated edge on the PacSalt 2. I am really looking forward to the soon to be released Swick and UKPK Salts in serrated LC200N.

Lc200n seems like a great steel. Never used it myself but if it is indeed halfway similar to vg-10 then I’d be a fan. In my limited experience with steel types I really like vg-10.

H1 is the best steel I've tried in SE.

H1, LC200N, VG10 are all excellent.

I like the geometry of thin FFG LC200N. That's one of the reasons I am really looking forward to the 2.5mm serrated blade stock on the UKPK Salt. I like the way it slices and thinner will hypothetically drift less.

Glad to see that there isn’t a huge list of premium steels, like k390 or the like. Those take a chunk from the wallet. Maybe this will be my first delica type knife. I know there’s a salt series that’s more or less a delica 4. Wharncliffe?

Spyderco will be producing serrated K390 in the not too distant future so the verdict on serrated K390 is still to be determined.

Can’t speak to SE LC200N, but SE VG10 is really really good and SE H1 is just plain spectacular.

Am I seeing that h1 works better job with serrations than vg-10? I never thought when I bought my first knife as an adult, my spyderco ambitious, I’d fall down this rabbit hole.

Even when comparing serrated edges, geometry counts. FFG vs low hollow/sabre/chisel grind.

H1 SE will hold an edge longer than VG10 or LC200N SE, but the latter two have very good edge retention already (SE is better in that regard than PE anyway, plus: SE will still "cut" things when dull, while dull PE is pretty useless).

I'd actually recommend to go with VG10 or LC in ffg for your first SE knife. H1 SE only comes in sabre/hollow, and ffg for me is just more versatile.
Endela, RockJumper or wharnie Delica/Endura would be a good start in VG10, in LC the Salt 2 is an amazing cutter (and the Caribbean must be too, but I never tried one).
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

H-1 is amazing in serrated form, not so great edgeholding-wise in plain edge. Two downsides I’ve experienced with it are:

1) The plain edge at the tip (just under 1/2” long on my Pacific Salt) dulls too fast.
2) The hollow grind necessitated by the work-hardening properties of H-1 is less performant in many tasks than the full flat grind possible in LC200N and VG-10 serrated blades.

Yes. Better edge holding, better corrosion resistance, and less likely to chip. The only thing VG10 has over SE H1 is they can full flat grind it from the factory.

Better? Thats a can of worms.

I would say go with h1 or lc200n. If youre going to get serrated you may as well get rust proof and tough also.

I've had good experiences with H1. I have three H1 knives including a serrated edge, Enuff Sheepsfoot that I have used on about one hundred dives in both salt and freshwater. Nice performer.

Based on my experience, the best SE steels are:

LC200N > VG-10 > H-1
