Sharpmaker

#1

Post by SmokeyQuartz »

Hi all,

Just a quick question:

I recently acquired a sharpmaker from Amazon, and I've noticed that the hand guards are steel rather than brass, as are all of the ones I've seen from Amazon.

Is this a genuine sharpmaker?

I.e. are sharp maker hand guards produced in both steel and brass?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi SmokeyQuartz,

Welcome to our forum.

We had to change the guards to aluminum instead of brass because of California's new law. You shouldn't eat the brass guards due to chemicals in the brass, but it's OK to eat the Aluminum? ;)

I just saw this post on one of the FB groups. Click on the forum right after and here it is again. I'm glad they were able to get the answer directly from Sal. I thought I'd seen mention of the change to the (more tasty) aluminum guard rods on here before.

Hey Sal, if aluminum ever bites the regulatory dust, I have a drawer full of takeout chopsticks I could gift you guys for the guards ;)

What?! At first I thought this must be a joke... Pretty weird law...

Perhaps though our "old" brass rods will become very thought after collectors pieces one day :p

There are probably several million brass doorknobs in California right now reeking untold havok onto the population. When will this senseless violence be stopped?

I'm surprised life isn't illegal in California because it eventually leads to death.

Happy I had the Sharpmaker shipped to me, I'll try not to eat the brass.

I wonder whether they will ban phosphor bronze washers.... the risk to anyone disassembling their knife must be considerable.

On the plus side:

1) The aluminum rods are lighter, good for backpacking.

2) the microscopically thin layer of aluminum oxide can be used for very gentle stropping

So is that ALL new sharpmakers have aluminum rods now?

So many thoughts and memories regarding brass of all things. From polishing ALL of it (along with bronze, copper, chrome, etc...) down in Orlando many, many years ago, to wearing it (though called "gold") later. How have we all not painfully perished... Brass of all things?! Hmmmhh...

The brass problem in CA stems from a combination of our Prop 65 (everything causes cancer!) and the fact that most brass has a small percentage of lead added to facilitate machining. Lead is bad for us and CA law requires sellers to alert end users.

Aluminum rods seem like a perfectly fine end-run around Prop 65.
