The guy in the very first photo runs the Cowboy program at my club. I met him for the first time yesterday. He'll be looking at a world of hurt with that sunburn tomorrow. If you come down some more there is a pic of two guys standing together posing. Guy on the left is my lawyer in real life and the gent on the right is also from my club and again, met him also for the first time yesterday. My buddies 22 YO son is there in the foreground of the group shot of the participants getting range instructions. At 22, he's 6' 8" tall, 320 lbs, has a size 8 1/4 hat size and wears a size 26 boot. I can't translate to metric but where I'm from, that's friggin big! His dad is 6' 4" and he dwarfs him.

First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

I went to practice Cowboy Action Shooting today. I borrowed a buddies holster and guns and practiced drawing and doing one hand speed shooting.
I tried both Ruger and Colt.
I think to be competitive, the way to go is .38 sp loaded way down and the same for the rifle. I also think I should shoot the old model Vequeiro (sp) because of the weight, much heavier than the new ones which are the same as the Colts now. The weight with the light 38 loads keep the muzzle down so you can aquire the next target while thumbing back the hammer.
My plan is to practice this year then go play next year.

GC,
Great pics! Whadya buddy feed his boy on!!
I think you're right with the light .38's in the revolvers, but it could be a trade off. My Uberti '73 in .357 will not shoot light loads, no matter what I try! They have to be driven at just over super sonic, about 1100fps to start performing. The only thing I could put it down to is that with a 24" barrel, perhaps the light loads are slowing down so much half way down, they are becoming unstable.
I've just started looking in the UK for CAS, it seems there is a little stalwart band of "hombre's" that have small comps using cap 'n ball revolvers. PhilUK44 on here, visited a comp I believe, last weekend. He's going to let me know what he thought.
They even organise trips Stateside for the big "End of Trail", so you never know, one day we could grace the same firing line!! :D
God bless,
Simon.

Hi Simon. I'll find out what diet he's feeding his stuff. His rifles are chambered for .357 which will shoot the .38's fine, with a conical shaped bullet for feeding up the ramp. Everyone uses the same load for the pistol/rifle events. Rifles have to be chambered for a pistol cartridge. No 45-70's Simon. :) I'll grap one for a photo.
Remember, the targets are at very close range, and big. Every match I've seen (3) and practice stages, there's no scoring rings and all targets are steel. Poppers or stationary. You either hit 'em to drop or clang. That's how you're scored. As far as I can tell, load them down as light as safely possible, and you're good to go. Your not at Bisley you know, it's point and shoot at a fairly big target at close ranges.
I was talking to a few people at the match last weekend regarding you folks in the UK. They told me it's a fast growing shooting sport there with a few chapters of SASS there. I don't know about that, but get on the SASS web site, contact them for more info on it.
