Would I be correct in thinking the last really great advancement or turbo boost in cutlery steel was the PM/micro-melt technology?

Edited:

Scratch that. There are more. Would be neat to see a timeline.

Rustproof steels would be in that list for sure, and the addition of nitrogen for some of the more recent steels.
I summarized many of the major advancements in this article (though not necessarily in order): https://knifesteelnerds.com/2020/06/29/ ... -all-time/
So who’s gonna write an updated version once Larrin’s Magnacut revolutionizes the industry? 🤔

Now there needs to be an lookout thread, so we can be notified as soon as the first MagnaCut equipped Spydie drops!

I hope that it gets the K390 treatment, rather than the SPY27 route... I'd like to pick it up in a sub $150 knife that *isn't* a Golden LW variant, failing that a G10 Manix 2 or Para 3 would be awesome!
(of course, if it's everything it seems to be, I'll eventually wind up with several)

What scale color do you think Larrin will choose/request for this steel?

I know I shouldn't because I have 2 right now (S30V and M4) but I'm hoping we get a Military in MagnaCut.
As for the color, maybe a pastel tone or even Fender-like Lake Placid or Seafoam green ? That'd be in line with the "vintage" ad for the steel.

This might be what it takes to sway a small folder enthusiast like me, into military size territory. Seems like a good match for the steel. Exciting times for sure

If you're interested in a MagnaCut Mule, please vote on the poll in the Mule Team subforum.

Pending scale color selection, my plan for a Millie would be to swap the blade into my fluted ti scales... If the G10 color is cool enough, those great ti scales would have to keep grinding along with "just" S30V.

Seconded, big time

I’ve also been wanting a thinner para 3, both regular and lw... I’m sure that’s a lot more complicated but it seems like magnacut holds up really well as a thin blade!

I'd be all over this. Been carrying a LW in rex45 since shortly after it came out and been extremely happy with it. Recently picked up an endela in k390... wanted to try Spyderco's take on it and the endela looked like a great in-between size. But after using the LW for so long the endela seems too big/heavy.

I assumed a slicer nerd like you would have chosen a different pattern as your first choice :D

Me too! Can't believe he wants a stubby/thick blade to test out this new powerhouse steel, especially in the less sturdy LW version.

:p

I've already tested it, ya guys will like it in anything.

I like the para 3 LW, it's a no frills user, carries nice, no qualms about using it up.

I obviously don’t have Shawn’s experience but I share his opinion. The Para 3 LW is one of the less expensive platforms for trying out the steels Golden works with, is light enough to carry almost anywhere, and would let the corrosion resistance of MagnaCut shine with the lack of liners.

I’d pick one up if it were available.

The PM3LW is perfect...
...if Spyderco will come over to the dark side and give us a near-zero-bevel flatgrind out of the box.😁
