I'm thinking it's time to switch to k390, or rex45, or maybe 4v...something with some great edge stability that's less prone to chipping.
What Spyderco is in your pocket today??

Living in France, exclusives in 4V seems out of my reach at an "acceptable" price. Is there any model in the current catalog in 4V ? I don't remember to have seen any but anyway, I appreciated my Endura ZDP189 at work for several years, I just need some time to resharpen it completely and I will probably reprofile the edge of the Manix 2 Maxamet in the same time.
But I'm waiting for an Endura K390 that I'm eager to test at work.

50mph wind gusts here. Would be a fun ride on the kayak in this wind :)

The bigger chip at the tip was from a coworker who used it as a screwdriver :o , so definitely an abuse but yes, I'm wondering the same. I don't know what angle is the factory edge but I will try something a bit more obtuse during my next sharpening session.
Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Using a knife as a screwdriver is certainly not good for any sharp edge, regardless in which steel... (at least he could have used the spine, not the edge for that?)Tally-ho wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 3:43 pmThe bigger chip at the tip was from a coworker who used it as a screwdriver :o , so definitely an abuse but yes, I'm wondering the same. If you like the Manix LW: Perhaps you can still find the REX45 sprint, or at least get one in BD1N instead of Maxamet ?
The former two steels should be less chippy, and especially BD1N will be a lot easier to repair SHOULD it chip...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Managed to find one?
Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
No, there have only been a few Spyderco folders in 4v, none in regular production now. I think k390 could be the perfect steel for you, anyhow.Tally-ho wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 3:23 pmLiving in France, exclusives in 4V seems out of my reach at an "acceptable" price. Yes sir! Got it on eBay after some haggling. It's the oldest Spyderco I own, but I got it NIB and it's very nice, especially after thinning out the edge to around 12~13 dps.

Nice knife Connor, is that a Superblue Caly?
I’ve been enjoying my new-to-me Superblue Stretch, which a fellow Aussie forum member kindly offered to me.
It dulls quicker than the tool steels which many of us are used to, but literally a couple of light passes on the Sharpmaker brown rods at 15dps and it’s back to fearsomely sharp. I thinned mine to 9dps.
Cool knife eh, Vivi?vivi wrote:

Have you reground the edge yet?
I just took mine back to 10dps on the Atomas this past weekend. Awesome steel and edgetaking.

Yep! Been hunting one for awhile. I had the recent Calypso Jr Sprint run, but sold it for a few reasons (tad small, pinned pivot). I liked how the Super Blue steel responded in sharpening - as you say, not the king of wear resistance but sooo easy to bring back.Cambertree wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 7:10 pmNice knife Connor, is that a Superblue Caly?

I also picked up a SB Endura (before I got the Caly 3.5). Not sure yet if I'm going to keep it or not.

I need some better equipment, heck I get excited when I get my knives down to 15-17 dps!! You guys with 10-13dps are a different breed haha :) I need to get to that eventually, especially after experiencing the perks of going from say 20 to 15dps, another few degrees has to be that much more impressive with some of these steels!
15 's in 10 different steels

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
That's one of the reasons I never tried fixed systems beyond the sharpmaker. Most of them aren't capable of the angles I sharpen at free hand.
I've been very pleased with the factory edge. I know someday I'll thin it out, but since I started carrying it all its needed is two quick stropping sessions with 40 micron diamond paste to maintain an aggressively shaving apex.Cambertree wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 7:10 pmNice knife Connor, is that a Superblue Caly?
