What steel would you like to see in a future Endura?

I do love sharpnes and a shiny blade, and I love it even more if both the sharpnes AND the shining holds for as long as possible. I buy to use and keep, not with the idea of selling it if I don't like it. Now finding a steel that serves both wishes on the highest level at the same time seems not so easy.

After trying what I have (s30v and hap40), and reading about what I don't have, there seems to be "the golden way of the middle" in a super steel that presents another solution to the old dilemma high edge retention vs high corrosion resistance, which has been based on high carbon for the edge retention so far. This new approach uses nitrogen to ensure high edge retention instead of carbon, and offers an unprecedent high level of both corrosion resistance AND high edge retention.

This steel is cold Vanax. It does exist, but seems quite expensive so far.

For a future Endura (and many other spydies) I hope that the production of Vanax increases so much, that it gets affordable enough for Spyderco to produce it, and for us consumers to buy it.

I am not so well educated in the world of steels, and I could have missanderstood something in my readings, so please correct me if I am wrong.

The only thing where you´re wrong is that you want to keep your blades shiny, and not let them show their "life" and wear... :p :p
(Of course totally just kidding my friend, based on our conversation in that other thread It´s as fine to be a "shiny guy" as it is to be a "patina person"! :) )

AEB-L for me. The only others I would be remotely interested in on the list is SPY-27 and XHP. I’m not a fan of vanadium carbide steels.

Although LC200N has been done in the Pacific Salt 2, I've found that the thumb ramp that model is too "steep" for my tastes. I was pleased to find out that the LC200N wharnie Salt 2 (the Delica-sized model) had a gentler thumb ramp that's more like that on the standard Delica and Endura.

There are probably major logistical and business problems with the following idea, but it would be really cool to see the Endura become a sort of folding Mule Team knife, with lots and lots of different steels.

I'll assume this trickles down to all the Seki family. I'd like to see a delica in M4, CTS-XHP, and 3V!!! Since I could only select one, I went with M4.

My preference would be for 20CV (and M390/204P). I like the K390 but another higher wear resistance stainless would be nice assuming the ZDP Endura gets disco'd like the ZDP Delica.

There's also been a Delica in I think all three of those... personally, a blue/M390 Endura to match my Delica would be great.

I voted 20cv though Spy27 would work as well. I’ve always wanted to try an Endura in something like a mid range stainless steel. I think the carbon or tool steels have been pretty well covered and while S30v has been done there have been few stainless sprints or options. That’s not to say that Spyderco hasn’t given us choices in the Endura lines.

I picked Cruwear naturally. :) 3V would be almost as nice and 4v as well. We had the Cruwear Delica and I bought one and I'll do the same for a Cruwear Endura. I'll buy more than one actually.

Cruwear has the best balance of toughness and wear resistance. M4 is a beast as I know from the GB1.

I wish ZDP-189 could be pushed up to 66-67 but I get that the cost would be to high to mfg and finish. It is a really interesting steel. At least Rockstead is pushing it but the cost is appropriate to pushing it that high. Makes me think Maxamet is a bargain for what we get.

I voted for SPY-27. It makes sense to offer the workhorse Endura in what may become the base Spyderco steel.

I got my pair of LC Pac Salts and now i don't want many Enduras.

I voted S90V. There’s been a precedent in the Knifeworks S90V Delica, which seemed to fly under the radar - for me at least.

My first thought was actually CPM M4, but then I realised I’d probably prefer one of the K390 versions over M4.

For those people who voted for Cruwear, how would you feel about the Hitachi analogue HAP5R?

That would probably be a decent steel for a longish blade in relatively thin bladestock, like the Endura.

Included in that shot are the following: Gin-1, HAP40, Damascus (VG-10 core), S30V, K390, Super Gold, Super Blue, ZDP-189, V-Toku 2, and ATS-55. (Also, an H-1 Pacific Salt 2 thrown in for the mix.)

A lot of votes for M4. I've been saying for ages that BHQ should extend their Jade/M4 lineup into Seki. They could use the existing Glow in the Dark FRN and it looks nearly identical to their Jade G10. I'd be all over some GITD M4 Enduras and Endelas, especially some TiCN coated ones!
