Sage 2
Sage 2
Good morning, first post!
I've had a sage 2 forever, been in my pocket everyday for I'm guessing over 10 years.
Got too aggressive yesterday and snapped the blade clean off by the spydie hole.
I see replacement blades are not an option, so I have a ridiculous question.
What are the chances of the new maxamet blade from a sage 1 fitting?
I only ask this because I love the one piece titanium handles on my sage 2 compared to the replaceable scales type I see on many models, including the sage 1 maxamet.
If this is not an option, I'd appreciate advice on a comparison between the sage 1 maxamet vs a para 3 maxamet.
Thanks for any and all guidance.

Hi Cdog,
Welcome to our forum.
That's a good question, for which I do not know the answer. I've not tried the switch. There is a lot going on in fitting blades.

Welcome to the forum! :)
Can´t help with the blade swap. but here is a recent thread on the comparison you asked for: viewtopic.php?t=88802&p=1492237
I personally would take the Sage 1 over the Para 3.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Re: Sage 2
I may not be remembering correctly but I'm pretty sure recently someone wanted to put a Sage 1 Maxamet blade in Sage 2 and someone else said they tried it and it doesn't work. I think there night be a difference with how the detent ball hole lines up. I'd also be surprised if the locking surfaces would work together.
Sorry your Sage 2 is basically dead in the water. 10 years of daily use I'd say you definitely got your money's worth. I think at this point I'd try to find another Sage 2 on the secondary market or just go ahead and but yourself a new Sage 1 Maxamet.

Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!
Re: Sage 2
A different perspective ... if you snapped the S30V, chances are that you will also snap the Maxamet ...
... I like weird ...

Re: Sage 2
I have tried the swap before. There is too much blade tang for the lock to even engage. It may be possible to grind off some of the tang but it’s too risky.
Re: Sage 2
Thanks to all for the replies.
I'm curious if there are custom scale options for the sage 1?
I'll keep a lookout for a second hand sage 2, I really love the knife.
I understand the comment about snapping the blade and I've decided to pick up a pocket pry bar, or something similar (suggestions) and use the maxamet for cutting only.
Thanks again, all the help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Sage 2
If you like the Sage 2, perhaps you might like the Spydiechef as well. It's the closest model in production that I can think of that is similar in materials to the Sage 2.
On the other hand, since we have had a re-issue of the Sage 1, maybe we can request Sal if they can do a sprint of the Sage 2 with a newer steel.

Re: Sage 2
Sage 2 with maxamet would be incredible.
Re: Sage 2
I like the SpydieChef I had, but the ergos were just a little cramped for me. I'm not sure about scales for the Sage 1, but the Spyderco Brouwer is a titanium frame lock, and Flytanium offers custom front scales for that knife that delete the scale side liner. That would get someone back into an all metal, liner-less knife with a finger choil.

Hi and welcome! I carry an Atwood Prybaby for prying needs. I don't think Spyderco makes any pry tools (?) http://www.atwoodknives.com/index.php

Good idea!
But still I am curious how exactly you managed to snap the blade at the Spydie hole?! Not easy to do...

Re: Sage 2
A SPY27 Sage2 with a blue anodized handle would be sooo cool !

I was hesitant to reply to this because I'm sure I'll get crucified, but what the heck, I'll own it lol.

Re: Sage 2
I'd stick with a Sage if you liked enough to carry it 10 years. Lot's of options and if you want different scales, they are out there or can be custom made easily enough.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

Re: Sage 2
I cracked open my two Sages to see how much work would be involved to swap blades.
The Sage 1 blade has just a bit more material where the lock engages.
The top/spine of the blades match perfectly but you can see the difference here.
The Sage 1 is on the bottom.
Here is the Sage 1 blade on the Sage 2 scale.
Lastly, the detents look pretty similar.
A blade swap seems doable with a little work.

Re: Sage 2
Great info but it's not really a swap if you can't use both blades in the other handles. Fitting the Sage 1 blade to work in the Sage 2 frame looks do-able but a lot of work to get it just right. I still think the OP would be better off just buying a new knife

Re: Sage 2
The only good thing about those dealers that sell for MSRP is that ten years down the road they may still have a new in box discontinued knife for sale. BentoBoxShop has a Sage 2 "Add to cart" button for MSRP.
