Light and fast afternoon cross country skiing with just my DF2 SE salt and a water bottle

After a long period of very cold temperatures it’s nice to have some warmer weather, and as the days gets longer one can even feel the warmth of the sun well into the afternoon. Unfortunately the weather went from one extreme to another. Snow is melting like crazy and I fear that winter might becoming to an end all too soon. Easter is traditionally the high season for cross country skiing around here, but I’ve got to say, the prospect of Mother Nature turning this trend around and securing skiing conditions well into April looks rather bleak right now.

Man, I love these kind of "...in your pocket today..." posts with just a bit of a background story and a window in how and where another forum member lives, what they enjoy doing with their knives and perhaps generally :)

And of course I love nature pics!
Yours is almost perfect, just the knife is missing... :D

Ok, thanks!

Don´t get me wrong, throwing with the knife rotating is absolutely fun too! :)
Thing is: You have to KNOW or measure the right distance so the knife "arrives" at the target with the tip first after one or two or whatever rotations. This can actually be cool, since one LEARNS to judge distances a lot better, but it also hinders spontaneous throwing from just any random distance (or at least makes it a lot harder)
.
With the "no spin" technique (tip ALWAYS facing forward) knowing the exact distance to the target does almost not matter anymore - I actually go for a run through lonesome forest some times and while running throw the knife on any dead tree or stump I see ;) no prob with "no spin"

Here https://youtu.be/SThz_pIUggA is a tutorial - actually pretty good content, though the way of presentation is a bit irritating (the guy is some world champion in knife throwing though, but slighlty annoying ;) ) - in the very first seconds you can see a pretty long distance no spin throw

Here https://youtu.be/k4ycspi73Qo&t=318s is a slow motion tutorial of the same guy: Again, the very first seconds show a long distance no spin throw and then perhaps watch from 5:15 to 6:00 where the technique can be seen quite well.

I'll try that out this weekend, I've always thrown with spin but see clear advantages to this style.

(Edit: No idea why all of the text gets underlined)

Hey Vivi, just opened the package with the book you recommended to me in it! :)

/ Did you actually try "no" spin knife throwing this weekend??

Thank you for the kind words, Wartstein
I’m quite irregular in my social media and forum preference, but when I do find the time, I really enjoy the pictures you and others share here. Like you, I also appreciate when the pictures are accompanied by some text that provides more background and insight. And wherever I find joy I try to participate myself, if I can. And for me, who’s much more of a user than a wizard in steels and sharpening, it’s certainly easier in this thread than some of the others.

Sorry for the lack of knife in frame. Unless I’m using the knife for something, I have a tendency to forget it’s even with me

Nice! I think you will enjoy it. Very interesting material.

I have not tried the throwing techniques yet but I did watch the videos you linked. Might be able to try it today. Not 100% sure which knife I'd use as I have no dedicated throwers. Maybe a Cold Steel Spike.

PS watch out for my next post in this thread. You'll like what I'm carrying on my first day back to folders ;)
