Thanks Cambertree. I was considering purchasing the CBN rods, but will replace my brown rods first and see if they give me the cutting performance I’m looking for.
No worries Zive. :)
I think the CBN or diamond rods are still worth getting. They add more versatility to the Sharpmaker and speed up certain sharpening operations far more than just using the brown rods.
If you’ve been using the Sharpmaker for 10 years, you’ll notice that it can take longer to sharpen a knife you’ve frequently sharpened because the edges thicken up. The CBN/diamond rods will help with that, or if you want to reset edges to 15 dps.

Zive, let me add to Cambertrees reply:
You might even try very coarse edges, and JUST use CBN or diamond rods :See for example this thread https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?t=85096
Very coarse edges are not for you if you want that hair-whittling-thinnest-paper-slicing kind of sharpness, but they have their own advantages.
I try edges right from the CBN rods lately inspired by Vivis thread I linked above. Like it so far!
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)
The comments about a coarse or toothy edge mirrors my experience. I bought the sharpmaker for more *consistent* bevels (no diamond or CBN stones yet), and I found both the brown and the white rods to be finer than I expected. Any advice on what grit of sandpaper to use that slots between the diamond and brown rods? I assume you use the wet/dry sandpaper.

I´d be more interested in even COARSER options than the CBN rods. Brown and CBN work great for me (white would so too, but I hardly use them, the browns are fine enough for me most times.
But for really extensive reprofiling I feel sometimes something even coarser than the CBN could be nice.
