New to forum, first post. Looking to get my first Spyderco knife.
How hard is it to sharpen the serrayyed blades and what tool would one use?
For non-serrated anyone use a Lansky to sharpen their blades?

Welcome to the forum! :)

"How hard is it to sharpen" is a bit "hard to answer" ;) without more specific details on what knife and especially what STEEL you´re thinking of - perhaps you can let us know?

If you want something pretty easy to sharpen, but still with decent edge retention, VG10 and BD1N are always great choices (or the 8CRMOV of the "budget line Spydies")
But with the right tools you´ll be able to sharpen most of Spydercos steels, if you invest a bit time to learn and also a bit MORE time to sharpen on harder steels.
What is always a good thing: Don´t let your knives get dull in the first place, but rather touch them up frequently.

I´d strongly recommend getting a sharpmaker, especially if you plan to sharpen serrated blades! It is a great tool and will handle serrations (but also plain edges) perfectly well.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Welcome!

Serrations are simple to sharpen, you'll want to get a Sharpmaker and I'd recommend the CBN or diamond rods along with it.

The Lansky is an ok setup. They're useful for reprofiling but I don't like the lack of angle settings and I really dislike clamp based sharpeners. I started out on a Smith's and then a Lansky and finally settled on an Edge Pro for heavy reprofiling and a Sharpmaker for routine sharpening. You can sharpen your plain edge just fine on a Sharpmaker too especially with the diamond and CBN rods to speed it up.

Hello & welcome!

I can only echo the sound advice above, about getting a Sharpmaker. It’s a really effective piece of kit that is simple to use, with a very little practice, on both serrated and plain edge blades.

Welcome to the forum! These days I use a Sharpmaker for serrations, a KME (similar to a Lansky) for everything else.

So what are you planning for your first spyderco??

Welcome to the forum! I only have one fully serrated knife. It’s LC200N. I have had good luck with the CBN/fine DoubleStuff2 as well as the Sharpmaker. Just using the med and fine triangle stones has yielded great results.

Welcome to the forum. I used to avoid serrated knives before I discovered that it was easy to sharpen them using the Spyderco Sharpmaker.

I also have a Lansky sharpening system, but I use the Sharpmaker more often now.

Welcome!
Serrated blades are a breeze to sharpen with a Sharpmaker (as is most any knife).
I have many sharpening systems/ tools but find it's hard to beat the quick and easy Sharpmaker. A lot of bang for the buck!

Lansky makes stones for serrated edges that work perfectly, as long as you are at the proper angle. You can free hand sharpening serrations by using the corners of the standard Lansky stones. A Sharpmaker makes it easier because of the longer stones. You can do it all with what you have, though.
