Jeez! Another one I want and I'm still waiting on SPY27...
This reveal looked slightly expensive for me.

Re: Z-Max mule!
I'm still wondering what MT30 will be. Sal has talked about protos in Rex-121, Vanax, and a 18% tungsten steel. The 18%w steel might be from ZAPP they seem to make a few types.

I think it’s interesting, but I’m not very familiar with the steel.
rex121 is the king of steel, but nature’s teeth have been cutting for hundreds of millions of years and counting

Re: Z-Max mule!
Isn't it Zapp's version of Cru-wear or PD1?
Edit: I see, it is NOT the same. I was thinking of Z-wear. Sorry.

Here's a comparison between some steels close in composition from AKS.

Re: Z-Max mule!
Im very interested in the steel. Im not really a fan of the mule design but if the price is right I might have to get one.

Re: Z-Max mule!
So basically it's very similar to Maxamet, plus 5% Moly. So how does that affect performance?Joshcrutchley1 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:59 pmHere's a comparison between some steels close in composition from AKS.Screenshot_2021-01-19-14-34-30_2.png

I think it is like a toned down Maxamet.

I looked up the manufacturers spec sheet...

...Saw mention of underhardening to improve toughness. I wonder what hardness Spyderco will aim for?

Re: Z-Max mule!
KnifeSteelNerds did a variety of testing and graphing on 48 steels, including Z-Max (which is chemically equivalent to Rex-86): https://knifesteelnerds.com/2020/05/01/ ... fe-steels/
Not to simplify the results too much, but Larrin assumed a similar toughness to Maxamet based on composition. As to edge retention (measured via CATRA/TCC), it classes slightly above 15V and somewhat below Rex121, when tested at an HRC of 69.8.
Interesting to see 15V pretty close to Z-Max in edge retention despite the 15V's much lower test sample HRC of 63. I'm curious as to what hardness Spyderco got for the Mule. Makes me more interested in Shawn's 15V knife coming out, considering you can get it way tougher (softer) with almost no loss in edge retention compared to the other steels in this quadrant.

Re: Z-Max mule!
If you look at how 10v trends upward with hardness I can only image 15v @69 hrc. I'm also very interested in BBBs colab.TenGrainBread wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 3:04 pmKnifeSteelNerds did a variety of testing and graphing on 48 steels, including Z-Max (which is chemically equivalent to Rex-86): https://knifesteelnerds.com/2020/05/01/ ... fe-steels/

Could be very hard (into low 70s Rc), wildly good TCC (>900) and we might guess toughness possibly below the 5 ft lbs range?
