You're asking that question on the Spyderco.com Forum?
I prefer the round opening hole (and I imagine that many others on this site do too :D )

I used to think the stud was better, but since I've been using a :spyder: , I find the stud akward. The difference is much more noticable, IMHO, when wearing gloves.

First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

I just finished SpyderAerobics and was contemplating the origins of the hole. When you think about it, the thumb makes a really natural move to sweep around and up to open the knife. One smart buck-a-roo thought that up! I sometimes wish all blades could use the SpyderHole opener. And a good size hole at that, 13-14 mm.

I honestly think that in terms of primary function (ie blade opening) they are equivalent for me. I do see relative advantages of each design.
Hole:
easier to clean
does not obstruct deep slices
probably a little easier to manufacture
easier to open if wearing gloves if hole is of sufficient size
can't break, fall off or loosen
Stud:
less restrictive in terms of blade shape/design
can be ornamental
I like the hole better because it is the simpler and more elegant solution IMO.

Well, if by "peg" you mean those almost bottle cap size lumps found almost exclusively on cheap Chi-com and Paki knockoffs of Spydercos - never tried one, never will. Between the stud and the hole, for me, with my somewhat arthritic hands, the hole wins no contest, as it is the only opening system that I find both 100% reliable and legal.

as a life time spyderco user (I'm still young
), I never had the chance to try a thumbstud until a few weeks ago. I was so disappointed! I don't like it at all! kinda hard to use after all those years of hole...
and now I wonder: do you think it's possible to drill a hole in a sebenza?

I can live with a thumbstud but I reaaaaaally prefer the hole, even if it's only for ease of cleaning. That's my main problem with a peg, but I also find the hole easier to operate with gloves, more "foolproof" if you can say that, looks better and so on. But not just a hole, the trademark round hole!

i realize that most will say hole, being its a :spyder: forum. But i have met several customers who prefer a stud/peg, but still carried a spyderco because of the undoubted performance and quality. Just wondering if there were any such forumates here.

Up until now I would say I prefer the thumb stud. I am however currently considering buying a Spyderco. I have had other knives with non-round holes and they seemed more functional. It makes sense that the perfectly round hole would work better. As for sharpening I think the stud sometimes gets in the way where as the hole cannot.
I think after a few weeks I will prefer the hole. As of right now I cannot tell you. :)

Stud, disc or hole, they all work fine for me. Maybe because I hold the knife a bit different then most, when opening. I most admit that I have knife with a Carson flipper, an M21, and that its really the easiest and fastest way to open a folder I'v ever seen. The Spydie gets the pocket time though, its the sharpest thing around and its way more functional.
