Four Years Later

#1

Post by Koop »

I bought my first Spyderco nearly four years ago. At the time, I knew very little about knives in general and specifics of knife steels and so on. I bought a Tenacious in a combination grind thinking it seemed like a great balance of cost, utility, quality - overall value in other words. I bought it to break down cardboard as my wife seems to get at least one Amazon delivery weekly.

That sent me down the rabbit hole. I bought several more Spydercos and even visited the showroom in Golden. But it occurs to me now - I use the original Tenacious every morning to slice a couple of lemons, and have done so for at least three years - and it holds up. I take care of it and rinse it and dry it within several minutes of use, and I've sharpened it many times, but the Spyderco 8Cr13MOV shouldn't be overlooked!

Nowadays I'm much more into Japanese kitchen knives and realize the importance of heat treatment and geometry over the latest, greatest steel offering. Just my thoughts after a few years of evaluating my knife usage.

Geometry #1, Steel #2.

Spyderco works so well for me in cutting that I almost ignore other brands nowadays. What is worse, they keep coming out with new models that I "have to have".

Doc I can almost "ditto" everything you just said. For years I've maintained a "Gotta Have" list as well as a more extensive "Want List". If I were a billionaire I would have to have warehouses to keep the knives that appeal to my desires  .

Spyderco has really spoiled us to a large degree. What other knife company do you think we would have had any chance at all to talk to the factory owners into coming out with a new Sprint Run C-60 Ayoob??? I doubt if any company other than Spyderco would accommodate their customers like Spyderco has done for us ;)

I’ve always liked knives but Spyderco became a near addiction.

Funny you posted this today Koop. Last night I started writing about one of my knives, and that post turned into a long story about how I got into Spyderco. I ended up not posting it because it got too long winded.

It's been about 14 years now for me. Hard to imagine EDCing a Buck 110 like I used to.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

vivi,

Nothing you post could ever be as long-winded as most of my posts end up being. :o

Koop,

As others have said, geometry is more important than the steel. Or the price. The knives I carry and use the most on a daily basis are not even close to my most expensive, and it’s not because I’m afraid to use the expensive ones. It’s because the ones I use the most perform so well, and are such a pleasure to use.
