FYI, here https://www.google.com/amp/s/blog.knife ... ade/%3famp
Is a good discussion of the origin of the Wharncliffe. The accompanying illustration shows early Wharncliffe knives being definitely sway back.

Re: Swayback
Edited to remove early morning bonehead question...
Is it rattling in the pivot area?

Re: Swayback
Normally I would think lanyard tube. But this one doesn’t have one. Next guess would be one of the internal stop pins. This model has two. Maybe one is just a hair too short. A very small dab of grease on the end of the stop pins could possibly help quiet it. But you’ll have to disassemble. Best advice would be send it to Spyderco if you can. They’ll take care of you.

Re: Swayback
You should definitely take the plunge. The Swayback is an amazing knife. I couldn’t be happier with mine.nerdlock wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 7:54 pmNemo3000 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 2:50 amHere I share a collection of pictures and various thoughts about my Swayback:

Thank you for the gentle words ! :-)
Yes my issue with my Swayback is like a curse. It always jump in my pocket.
Long sharp edge in a very gentleman packaging. Clever engineering and great ergos.
It is very hard to put it back in its pouch. Once you start to use it... It is an addiction. :-D

I know, I probably should...urgh. :p
Aside from the price, one thing that kinda bothers me about this otherwise excellent looking knife is the "sway" at the butt end of the handle...how does it feel in the hand?
It looks like in heavy use, it will dig in into the palms of the hand, near the pinkie finger part... can Swayback owners comment on this?

You had me at your review title referencing the Mandalorian. :D
Seriously though, that was a well-written review and you used it in food prep and even woodwork which shows how impressive this knife is. You even used in in the reverse Pikal position, who would have thought that this design could possibly be used for bladed martial arts lol.

Re: Swayback
No issue with mine. It is not a hotspot. And I can hold the knife in a lot of different ways.nerdlock wrote: ↑Thu Nov 19, 2020 3:47 pmsamdasnake wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 10:59 pmYou should definitely take the plunge. The curve of the handle has never been in the "way" while cutting hard stuff in hammer grip.
Re: Swayback
The Swayback is almost perfect.
It could be a bit smaller(and have LC200N )
But, the thing that keeps it in the safe, is the almost inaccessible Spyderhole. With the hole itself being so smooth and the the handle cutout being straight cut, it is a nightmare to open single handedly.
It needs a sharper hole or a chamfered/contoured handle cutout and I might actually carry it.

Re: Swayback
Once you get used to it, it opens easily but there is a serious different way (a "sway?") to open the blade...
I have told that story in my first article post on the wayback:

Re: Swayback
I also found the Swayback difficult to open at first. After an hour or two of experimenting, I figured out that I had to approach the Spydiehole at a different vector compared with my other Spyderco folders. Having accustomed myself to this, I can now open it easily.
Re: Swayback
My experience mirrors Mikey177's. But, I do think if they had machined in some relief cut it wouldn't have significantly altered the aesthetic but would have helped with the opening issue. I love the knife and it's in my weekly rotation often, however I found out the hard way that opening left handed was very difficult. Was very thankful when my rt thumb healed.
Re: Swayback
How do you even do it? I've only seen pictures of the knife and haven't held it, but it seems completely impossible to me. Which is a shame, because I find the knife absolutely gorgeous...
Time is a great teacher. Unfortunately, it kills all its pupils.
Re: Swayback
What I ended up doing was a pinch grip with the blade and my left thumb in the hole and a sharp and short downward motion. The momentum snapped the handle into place. I'm sure there's a term for that type of opening that I'm unaware of.

Some new pictures:
Re: Swayback
Oh yes, I see. I can't remember what it's called either but I've opened knives this way too. A bit awkward but doable in a pinch ( :p ). Thank you.
