K390 Delica HRC?
Hi Sal and everyone, was just wondering what the HRC is running at on the new K390 line from Seki factory. I got a new Delica in K390 and me and a few people were trying to find out what the actual numbers were if you don't mind sharing specifics. I tried looking around but haven't found anything.
Cheers.
Cheers.

Re: K390 Delica HRC?
The only Seki K390 I know of that's been tested so far is the Police 4. Three different examples tested at 64.2, 65.2 and 65.5.

Re: K390 Delica HRC?
I wonder if the new ones are the same, same factory so it might be similar levels, I was guessing it was high, mine is still shaving hairs 3 weeks in.Accutron wrote: ↑Sat Nov 14, 2020 6:07 pmThe only Seki K390 I know of that's been tested so far is the Police 4. I just got a Delica k390. The results were a bit surprising. It was poked twice, with the results of 66.4 and 66.5 HRC)
I found this in the HRC Database thread.

Re: K390 Delica HRC?
I recall the days when everything was run at rc 58-59. Even when new steels were used they were not heat treated to bring out their best performance. Heck if they are rc 62 or above I'm more than happy.

I just hope the upcoming P4 LW K390 will also be heat treated the same...couldn't find a good P4 G-10 nowadays.

Can't wait for my Endela! I think this is one of the best new steels in awhile.

Hi Londinium Armoury,
We always try for optimal working hardness for the steel we're using..

Re: K390 Delica HRC?
This seems overhardened, particularly with the Delica's thin blade stock. Bohler's maximum recommended hardness is 64 HRC. K390's toughness isn't fantastic anyway, and at 66.5 HRC, it's getting down near Maxamet.nerdlock wrote: ↑Sat Nov 14, 2020 9:43 pmWow, that's good!Buddafucco wrote: ↑Sat Nov 14, 2020 6:51 pm(Re: HRC Database

After the abuse Shawn has put his k390 police through, it looks plenty durable to me

Steel foundry HT recommendations are generally for applications other than knives.Accutron wrote: ↑Sat Nov 14, 2020 11:22 pmThis seems overhardened, particularly with the Delica's thin blade stock. I'm stoked to hear that it's being run as hard as it is. I run my K390 Police at around 9~10 dps and it's tough enough for EDC even at that extreme angle.

Re: K390 Delica HRC?
Precisely. Additionally, a steels working hardness can change based on a particular heat treat. So the foundries general recommendations, nor their recommended heat treat is tailored for cutlery. The Meat man wrote: ↑Sun Nov 15, 2020 3:13 pmSteel foundry HT recommendations are generally for applications other than knives.Accutron wrote: ↑Sat Nov 14, 2020 11:22 pmThis seems overhardened, particularly with the Delica's thin blade stock. Is the delica 4 "slicy-er" than the endura 4/police 4?

Re: K390 Delica HRC?
The Delica has slightly thinner blade stock, so possibly a little, but the primary grind is probably the same.

Re: K390 Delica HRC?
I'd say yes. The Delica has thinner stock, and while the Delica isn't as thin behind the edge as one might expect, most P4s I've seen/heard about came a little thicker bte than the typical 20 thousandths on inch you usually see. I ended up thinning/convexing my edge a little by hand, and it cuts great now.

Re: K390 Delica HRC?
Precisely why despite my aversion to large knives, I'm on the lookout for the P4 G10 K390...or if that isn't possible, consider purchasing the P4 LW K390.

Re: K390 Delica HRC?
I hope I could buy a P4 in K390 here in Europe at dealers shop, but not sure I will be lucky to see one enough earlier.
