You've said yourself plenty of times that you only use your knives for self defense, why do you need 2nds or backups!?!

As time progresses and I study and learn more about edged weapons and melee weapons, I see that there are better blade shapes for a task, better steels, locks, etc., so I buy another knife or tool. Always looking for something better for a specific need. The Hinderer XM-18 with clip point blade is a good warm weather knife. A Spyderco Respect or Tops Prather War Bowie is better for the Winter.

There are the different seasons here in Illinois, and I look for the best weapons in warm and cold weather because my opponents clothing would be different. Even if they wear 3 or 4 layers of clothing I have to reach important targets to stop them from killing me.

Then of course there is WROL(without rule of law), and if that happens, all bets are off, and I'll carry whatever I need regardless of size and previous restrictions, hence the RMJ Tactical Trench weapon. I hope to buy a short sword(20 inch blade) or two someday too. A short sword would work very well with the escrima/arnis that I've studied.

I could probably get by with 25 edged weapons, and I've thought about getting rid of some. I have given $350 in knives away already. I'd sell some of them but it just isn't worth dealing with people and the hassle of selling them.

How about you? Still collecting 2 inch folders? Still think that sitting back and dialing 911 is your best option? What do you do when SHTF or WROL? Do you have any edged weapons skills?

Explicitly why I want another Spyderco Province is because I plan to modify one of them by sharpening the top swedge and coating it with NP3+ so that it is black.

I guess I'm not a worry wart and don't prepare myself to fight or defend myself these days. I'm 37, I'd like to thinking fighting and killing days are past me. I guess I would rely on my wrestling and football background, as well as always having some sort of folder on me...which are usually 3" or longer. Heck, just an $8 screw driver in my back pocket, or a #2 pencil could do just as much damage as some crazy sword...what good is a sword if someone gets up in close to you?? You could be on the ground before you even draw it. You're screwed and already leaking from said screwdriver or pencil after the take down. But, this clearly isn't the thread for this kind of conversation.

I was attacked by 4 college football players in '87. I knocked the first one out with one strike, and as he went to the floor one of his buddies caught him and he lay there convulsing. Then I fought with the remaining two for 5 minutes. I did not win the latter half of the fight but never went down.

I was not carrying a weapon on me. Lesson learned.

I carry weapons now and have had weapons training. World of difference. You never know when you are going to be attacked. Like General Mattis says, "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."

I'm sorry, but when are you going to encounter someone on the streets carrying these types of weapons?? I'm willing to bet, never. Yes, very cool to have those kinds of skills...but come on now. Let's be realistic here.

The skills translate to every hand held weapon under 4ft long, including bottles and pencils.

I should have ignored him. For almost half of every post that I make he has something negative to say about my purchases.

Not sure what it is....

I was only wondering why you needed backups for knives you dont use, because then you would have the extra funds for the knives you can't currently get, that you desire because funds are tied up with duplicates. That's all!

Rick, I don't understand why it should matter to any of us how someone else chooses to spend their money or what they decide to buy with it?

I totally forgive you. I'm like that. I'm being tactful and truthful here....I don't always say the right thing 100% of the time either.

I carry as many of my knives as I can over time, it's just got to be the right time. For ex, right now, when it's cold out and I'm wearing something like a thick Winter coat, I know that a 3 to 4 inch folder isn't going to do any good. (Right now, we are in the middle of a small heat wave so everything is on hold!) But I'll be carrying my RMJ Raider Dagger, or Spyderco Sustain and making use of my BRT Bladeworks knife harness. You need a 5 to 6 inch blade to penetrate all of the layers.

Let's get back on track! :spyder:

I just received this one in the mail and I look forward to rotating it into my edc. It is a Boker Joule, designed by Michael Reinhold. I really think Spyderco missed the boat on this one . Fit and finish appears to be good. The edge is not ground perfect but it's not terrible. The action is smooth and I am able to open and close it with one hand despite the thumb stud :D .

Nice, I need to buy a Joule and Rockhopper! They will be my first non-Spyderco knives in many years. :D
I agree that the Joule would have been a fantastic Spyderco. Especially since Spyderco seems to be on a bit of a wharncliffe trend lately too.

Those are gorgeous scales. It gave me a wild scifi daydream that maybe in the future we would see SAK scales that functioned as a touch screen information display, much like the present smart watches.
Who knows if it won't. Only the displays have to be harder than they are today ;)
