I tried so hard...

#1

Post by JuPaul »

...I even offered him my brand new cruwear Delica, my Sun and Moon Chap, or my hawkbill dragonfly, but I still failed to get a Spyderco into my husband's pocket. He actually came to me wanting to look through my collection for a new knife - specifically for something small, slim, and really light that he could carry in his lightweight shorts. Alas, turns out he doesn't like backlocks, which rules out most of the small frn spydie lightweights (para3 lw was bigger than he wanted).

So I guess my point is, there's a gap in the spydie lineup that could be filled by something like a lil native lightweight comp lock, or a mini Manix lightweight.

Am I missing any other small non-backlock lightweight spydercos??

Maybe a slipjoint would work? Something like the FRN UKPK, Urban, or Squeak.

He wants something snappy to open. He's used to an assisted open folder. ;) It's looking like a mini bugout is gonna fit the bill for him. It's not a spydie, but at least it's a cool little knife that I wouldn't mind stealing if he doesn't like it. :D

Meerkat? (the so crazy it might work category)

I've been trying for years to get my husband to carry a spyderco, so far I haven't been successful. He's content with carrying my old combo edge Kershaw Leek 😕.
However, I did buy him a stepped Ti chap for this Christmas so hopefully he carries that one SMH

I showed him a sage 5 lw online, but it was too big as well. He loved the Chap/lil native/dragonfly size, but didn't want "thick" g10 or a backlock.

Yeah, I should probably just go ahead and get him a Watu, and if he doesn't like it oh well, I guess I could take it if I had to. ;) ;)

Maybe the Rhino? It's not FRN, but it weighs less and is shorter than a Delica.

Hmm...I didn't think of that! I'll have to show him a Rhino.

He's had a liner lock until now, but he liked the axis lock and cbbl's I showed him. He liked the comp lock on the para3 lightweight, just wanted something more in the Chaparral size range.

Cricket!

Is the techno 2 small enough?

Edit.
I realise they are not "lightweights" but they are not heavy.

Would an ikuchi be too big? Seems like it would fulfill that snappy opening desire.

II too think Ikuchi may be of interest. Longer blade, but supper slim. Like carrying a pen in a pocket.

Tough one..
- Lil Native comp.lock. is not exactly light for its size..
- Same goes for the Ambitious (linerlock)
- Maybe you could lend him a small backlock knife for some time and he'll see if he gets used to that lock?
- Or, alternatively, lend him a Para 3 LW and he could test if it really feels (too) big in pocket?
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)
