The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
Reprofiled and did some action fix up on my work knife yesterday, a coated s90v orange frcp manix lw. And I realized something,
I like that knife. I’m not totally enamored with it like I am with my other more edc focused knives. but you know, I like it. It’s not perfect, but It works well enough for me.
And I think, at some level, that’s all you really need. Something that works. Three cheers for functionality. Thanks for coming to my weekly brain dump. Drive safe and remember to drink water.

Lightly insane.

Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
They're very capable knives despite seeming very light in design. I do wish they would have updated the scales to be rounder on the corners, that was my only issue.

Maybe it's time for a Manix LW 3 with a more rounded handle and not a pinned construction?Evil D wrote: ↑Fri Sep 11, 2020 12:42 pmThey're very capable knives despite seeming very light in design. I do wish they would have updated the scales to be rounder on the corners, that was my only issue.

Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
Manix 2 LW is a big favorite of mine. It just feels right in the hand. And it is oh, so light. Ideal (for me) for backpacking and hiking, and big enough to handle anything.
I do agree with the others calling for chamfered edges. I do feel like it is boxier than necessary.
I have the old BD1 model. I have been meaning to pick up a BD1N model so I can really compare the steels side-by-side. Wouldn't say no to some sprints in some tasty steels like K390, though.

Would not be opposed to this suggestions, but for me the handle feels great as it is and the pinned construction never bothered me.
What I´d actually really like to see in a Manix 3 LW:
- A bit longer blade so that it extends to the very end of the handle when the knife is closed (this would offer a longer edge like Shaman or PM2 have while changing absolutely nothing else in the knife)
- A full SE version
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)
Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
I absolutely love my Manix 2 LW and yes, it does feel very light! It actually is of course, but I think it feels even "lighter than it is" due to the relation of weight vs footprint.
As a matter of fact the linered Endela is almost as light (88g/3.1oz vs 85g/3.0oz)and offers a bit more cutting edge
and the Pacific Salt (offering a lot more edge) is noticable lighter (2.8 oz in the H1 version, incredible 2.5 oz in the upcoming ffg LC200 N variant)
As much as I love the Manix 2 LW: In my I use I sometimes miss the longer edge knives like the even lighter Pac Salt offer, and so when hiking I often take the latter with me

Like most knives it's fine for casual use, it's only an issue when you go full idiot mode and cut up two huge bushes with it like I did. Doing heavy yard work will show you hot spots you didn't know existed.

Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
I agree with the screw construction. I haven't tackled it, as I'm not sure what new screws are needed, and I'm not so motivated as to figure it out on my own. It would take all of 20 minutes to set it up on the mill and blow it apart, but experimenting with fasteners seems dull.
I'm happy with the pronounced edges, but rounding them should be quick work with a file and sandpaper.

Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
I've been saying (mostly to myself) that the Manix 2 LW is all I really need despite having much nicer (IMO) and more expensive knives. It feels just fine in my hand and don't think the handle needs any changes. I also have no issue with it being pinned construction.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!
Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
A blade swap and screw construction are possible with the current handle molds, but I have no idea what screws to order. We had a member years ago swap the S110V blade out of the original LW and into a G10 handle and then reassembled the LW handle with the S30V blade.

Ok, I´ll admit: Never did what you describe with a Manix 2 LW
I do trust you that this would get uncomfortable eventually and almost certainly quicker than with lets say a rounded Shaman handle!

Why in the world would you think using a pocket knife to cut up two huge bushes was a good idea? :D

Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
The Manix 2 lw IS pretty good! Manix never appealed to me but I got the LW just to try out Maxamet and it completely changed my feelings on the design. The LW is like a completely different knife. I still wouldn’t list it in my top 3 favorites but somehow it finds its way into my pocket more than just about any knife I own (other than my salts).
Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
it's seriously the best non-salt knife that spyderco makes. but the pins!!!!! those pins are the thorn in the side of the m2lw that keep it from being perfect.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
Ha! I hear ya. I sold off my Manix LWs in my last purge and refuse to buy another until they move to screw construction. Hoping by the time a St Nick's version roles out they have CQI'd to screws.
CRU-CARTA THE SEKI MODELS! AND BRING US THE DODO-FLY!
Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good
fortunately, i have the xhp version from kc, so it's pretty good to go. even mine had a spot under the handle i was barely able to clean up. i don't know why spyderco even makes the lw in versions with rust-prone steels or why anyone would buy one.steelcity16 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 11, 2020 5:53 pm
