Knives that had been kept back for a certain amount of time for warranty replacements, maybe?

Or credit returns from the distributor which didn’t sell after a couple of years of being in their inventory?

Is there any way of actually buying and viewing the stock at the SFO, other than going there in person?

It would be nice to have a seconds sale page with no factory warranty on the website, like Grohmann knives in Canada do.

I’m kicking myself I didn’t get any of the PE 52100 PM2s or Para 3s when they were available. At least l have the superb 52100 DLC Manix.

My 52100 CE PM2 was due to have the blade removed for maintenance, as the action was exhibiting a bit of drag. I cleaned and lapped and lightly lubricated the blade tang, pivot, washers and front of the metal liners, and it’s glassy smooth now.

I really love using this knife. It offers both raw, brute cutting power, and thin, razor edged finesse.

I was told by an employee there that the knives were "taken back from the distributor" and that this is the first time they've ever done this. They are not seconds nor defective in any way. I didn't press further, but reading between the lines, the knives probably had really poor sales and Spyderco did them a solid.

I was thinking that these may sell after all. Some people (me!) might see them at the SFO and think, "Well, I missed getting one a few years ago, and I could go online and order one from one of the retailers, but the price is the same here and I've already looked this one over, and it looks good, and..." A bird in the hand situation.

In my case, I've been reading up on and more interested in tool steel blades, (52100, K390,) lately. Plus, I've been carrying my PM2's more lately, so I picked one up.

Can confirm, the scales are awesome. Although the texture is the same as standard G-10 (peel-ply), the CF has a slightly different feel, and apparently weighs a little less.

Jon, I do most of my thinning out of the edge area with the Atoma 140 diamond plate, stopping just short of the edge apex. I check this with a loupe. Then I clean up the bevel with the 400, 600, and 1200 Atomas. Finishing stones are the 1200 OCB Venev and Spyderco 3”x 8” UF stone. I clean up the apex with a Sharpmaker microbevel. I make my own strops and usually do a couple of light passes on 3, 1 and 0.25 micron diamond emulsion sprayed strops.

That’s for the initial sharpening and bevel thinning out.

It probably sounds involved or overcomplicated, but if you enjoy sharpening, as I do, it’s a pleasant way to while away a bit of time.

After that, it’s a very quick and simple resharpening process to just use the Sharpmaker to resharpen. It literally only takes a few passes and a minute or two, including set up time to restore a screaming sharp edge, because the actual contact area at 30dps per side is only about 1mm wide. Works well for high carbide steels as well - less than 10 passes per side usually on any steel and they’re back to extremely sharp.

That's cool, and that's 30dps? Looks more acute in that photo. I always liked your's and Meat Man's bevels. I kinda want to get some Naniwa's but they're pricey. I make my own strops too, it's a fun little project.

I have the plain edge 52100 pm2 and it is such a good steel. Im suprised we dont see more of it from Spyderco. It was the first mule team.

Sorry, I didn’t explain that too well.

The initial thinning out on the benchstones is quite a bit more acute than 30 inclusive. I don’t know what the angle would be, but it’s around 20-22 inclusive. (Roughly checked with a phone angle guide app.)

Then the Sharpmaker microbevel is set at 30 inclusive, and subsequent touchup sharpenings are also at 30 inclusive on the SM.

After quite a few sharpenings, the microbevel gets not so micro and thickens up, and it’s back to the stones for thinning out again.

Higher carbide steels might be ground to about 22-26 inclusive, with a 40 inclusive microbevel.

The Naniwa Choseras are superb stones, with the best sound and feedback of any stones I have tried. I was almost going to bring them out to do this job on the 52100 PM2, but in the end just stuck with the diamond stones for the less water and slurry mess to clean up afterwards.
