Spyderco always seems to be full of surprises! :D

Mine arrived today, with Date Code 'LS' (Dec. 2019)
A friend of mine got his in today as well. His is Date Coded 'GT' (July 2020)

What could be considered even more surprising? The box is labeled: "Manix Pln Frn REX 45"
Historically, and in Reveal 4. This has been a FRCP handled knife. I wonder if this has changed, or, is this a label typo?
I went through some of my other Lightweight Manix 2 knife boxes, and see no mention of either (FRN or FRCP), on any of those boxes. :spyder:

I noticed the FRN vs FRCP discrepancy as well. I was going to call, asking about that, but I didn’t get around to it this week.

It’s worthy of note, though, that the Native FRN and the Manix FRCP are still slightly different shades of burnt orange.

I plan to post a picture comparing them to old and new burnt orange G10, as well as the FRN and FRCP, if possible tomorrow.

I actually like the color better than the HAP40 sprints. It's little more vibrant

Thanks for the heads up gentlemen. This will be only my second FRN knife. My first is/was a Native 5 with maxamet.

It is odd too. When I was brand new to Spyderco, I handled an FRN Manix in a sporting goods store and was delighted by how it felt in my hand. Didn't buy it, but proceeded to buy quite a few G10 Manix knives, so this is sort of coming full circle.

Still no screw construction... :(

I was hoping the delay was for some CQI to move these to screws. Bummer. My wallet lives to fight another day.
Why do you want to screw with it?

I took a picture of 4 of 6 burnt orange examples. I have new Golden FRN, new FRCP, new smooth G10, and used peel-ply G10. I forgot to include the original HAP40 Seki FRN and new peel-ply G10. That’s why I didn’t post the photo yet, but I’ll post what I have. I’ll just update this post/thread once I get a full team photo.

We've had discussions or arguments about this before, IIRC the outcome was that the lightweight Manix 2 was always FRCP and not FRN. I think the point of this thread was that the box for the latest model is labeled "FRN" when typically they have been making those from FRCP. (And don't ask me to tell what the difference is between these 2 materials.)

Thank you much, attila! :)
You have inspired me to do the same here. Though I only have the two Manix knives, and the Shaman.

Of course different Cameras, lighting, and settings. Will show variations in color, but you've done a great job here. Putting them all together.

If I had to pick, and only thinking about the color alone. That darker (FRN) handle looks the best, to me.
I don't know what knife that is? but it sure has to be a small one. The clip ends nearly at the Spydie hole! :D

As of this afternoon. Sunday, September 6th, 2020.
Between myself, and a couple of friends of mine. We have 4 different Date Codes so far, on this knife.

:spyder: Dates codes so far:
LS
FT
GT
HT

Not a bad thing. Just an observation, and an interesting one at that! :D

As a matter of fact is it possible to distinguish between FRN and FRCP based on appearance alone? Thanks.

No, not that I know of bchan. If I recall correctly. One of the reasons that FRCP was chosen for the Manix. Was it's ability to be made translucent. Like the Spyderco Manix 2 Knife Translucent Dusk Blue - C101PBL2 :spyder:

I suppose if a person was a real good plastics freak. A difference might be detected, if heated or burned (destructive testing), by the smell of the smoke, or the way it acts when melting.

I'm pretty sure there was another reason why it was chosen, but I can't think of it at the moment. I'll edit this post, if and when that info comes back to me. :)

FRN or FRCP? I'll just believe whatever is printed on the box. Should be here today.

I thought I recall Sal or someone saying a long time ago that it had added rigidity over FRN that was needed for the linerless construction of the Manix LW.

Is the Native LW FRN? Anyone know off hand?

The Manix and Native (the Rex 45 LW sprints) definitely have a different feel in my hand.
