Urban Chief

Post by Thunderpants »

Of all my Spydercos, the Urban gets the most use. Its slipjoint design is perfection itself - being able to open and close a blade using nothing more than a thumb is unbeatably efficient, and for most cutting tasks a lock isn't really necessary.
I think the UKPK is a slightly larger (?) but I was wondering what is/was Spyderco's beefiest slipjoint? An up-gunned Urban with a 9cm or 3" blade would put a gigantic grin on my face.

The UKPK has a 3” blade. It and the Urban are two of my favorite Spydies. The red g10 HH exclusive is worth snagging if you want something a bit more robust than the lw models.

As far as the “beefiest” Spyderco slipjoint, I think that honor goes to the discontinued ti PITS.

A slip joint Kapara has been rumored to be in the works and would be an instant buy for me.

Sorry that 3" was a typo, I meant a little longer than that. Yeah, a Kapara slipjoint would be fantastic , but I'd like to see it in the same realm of affordability as the Urban and UKPK so FRN instead of carbon fibre!
I've never heard of the PITS... I'll have to get my googlin' shoes on.

Sal has mentioned the Canadian PK in development... IIRC 3.5 inch.

I'm not sure, but I picture a Caly 3.5 slipjoint.

While an Urban Chief is fun to imagine, we shouldn’t lose sight of the original Urban’s intent, which was to stay within the restricted lengths and lockups common to city life.

Would I be interested in a slipjoint the size of a Native Chief. Sure. But let’s call it the Rural. :p But a Canadian PK could do in a pinch.

I cannot wait for the Canadian PK 3.5. I hope it is exactly a 3.5” UKPK. These are basically slip joint Calys with thinner blade stock.

I own two PITS and I'd love to see a sprint of the PITS in an upgraded steel. S90v PITS? K390 PITS? Definitely in for something like that.

I think the PITS is probably the toughest slippie we make.

I forgot this is an EU mfg model. K390 in a nice grind like the K390 urban.

The PITS looks like a beast. A handsome beast, but still a beast!
What I love about the Urban is its feather-lightness. (Also the K390 steel which ages very gracefully). An elongated Urban is what I'm talking about (though I imagine there comes a point where FRN handles start getting a little flexi by themselves.)

The “rural” should be a fixed blade!
