Caribbean back in stock: Still got an old one

#1

Post by VooDooChild »

So I ordered a caribbean when they came back in stock about a week ago. Just got it in and it is not the cqi version.

It has none of the differences pointed out in the other thread. The biggest give away is simply that the hardware is not coated.

The date code on the box is FR, but interestingly there is a sticker on the bag inside the box that says GS.

Im just assuming it was forgotten about in the corner, or maybe a return from someone who wanted a cqi version. Im not sure.

Im ok with not having the cqi version. I wasnt really a fan of the blacked out hardware anyways. Its still a salt and will hold up for me just fine, Im sure.

Im just throwing a heads up out there. Even though something was out of stock for a long time and then came back in stock, it doesnt mean its new.

Thank you. I’ll now wait for my next Caribbean.

CQI without a naming distinction is a flawed idea, methinks.

Common problem in various products. Drives me nuts!

If you know there is a newer model that you want, best to call it in and verify before placing the order.

I got an old one too, dated April 2018. I was told that the Taichung factory sometimes holds back product. It is also only some of the models, mine was a SE Sheepfoot. I ended up sending it back, and I was told it could be months before we see a full lineup of CQI’s.

Thanks. I ordered a leaf shape plain edge from DLT 2 days ago. I'll let everyone know if I get the CQI version when it gets here.

I got a sheepsfoot plain edge that is CQI, I'm told that the serrated ones don't have the CQI yet.

Yeah, the serrated models were still in stock lots of places - before this recent restock - so maybe they haven't had a full new run yet.

The problem is what do they do with the older version? Nobody wants the original when the "new and improved" version comes out, but then it'll hurt to swallow the cost on what is a perfectly functional knife. I wonder how many of the originals are out at dealers?

I know that I once got a BD1 Manix 2 LW after the BD1N version was out. I inquired afterward (because the photo showed BD1N) and was told that they had mixed stock of both, and would send me whichever one I wanted.

I suspect the good dealers _do_ just eat the cost of the old inventory.

I've suggested the S&W solution of adding a -1, -2, etc to the model number, but Spyderco doesn't seem interested.

Spyderco should let dealers sell them at a further discount from MAP. That would let them move the old inventory without completely eating them at a loss.

I'd be first in line.

Blacked out hardware, inside handle color of g10 is black instead of yellow, the milled out lines on the handle seems to be noticeably thicker. I have seen pics of a different clip on line but I havent heard of anybody getting a different clip. Maybe some other stuff.

I could care less about any of this. There were 3 or 4 things that (I think) actually needed to be cqid on the caribbean, and they, so far it seems, didnt do any of them. As far as im concerned its the same knife with different hardware.

Mine came from the SFO and was made two years ago. I don’t think the CQI versions of at least the SE Sheepfoot have even been made yet.

Thank you. One minor drawback I found is that the handle grooves make it harder to clip to my pocket than my other Spydercos. But I love that grip in my hand!

Thanks for the link. As VooDooChild said, those changes don’t sound particularly compelling to me, either.

Edited to add: just read the other linked thread. The wider ridges might help the reholstering issue I have. Interesting about the galvanic issues Sal mentioned. I wonder if feedback from Lance (Surfgringo) led to that change?
