Paramilitary 2 Salt ?

#1

Post by Red »

Will a Paramilitary 2 Salt ever be an option? That would be the perfect Grail Spyderco for me, maybe even a Manix 2 Salt!!

We've talked about both for years. For a while it was said to be an issue because of the availability of H1 in the US but then we got the Autonomy, then it was the liners but then we got the Caribbean, then it seemed like the Manix 2 LW was a prime candidate since it at least didn't have liners but now we have the Para 3 LW and I would assume will eventually get a Para 2 LW to match. If they don't have enough H1 they could always use LC200N. There must be some concerns about whether or not they'll actually sell, or maybe they just don't want to create competition against their already established Salt models. Then again the Caribbean is doing just that so who knows. Maybe if the Caribbean sells well enough it'll prove that there's interest in an "upscale Salt". It could also just be a capacity issue. I was thinking just last night that a Native Chief Salt with SE LC200N would be pretty awesome and would match the Naive 5 Salt.

All great points, thank you for the info. As a Spyderco enthusiast, my enthusiasm overcomes the reality that it is a business and has business concerns to deal with that I forget to consider. Heck, I am happy as can be with the current Salts to choose from. 👍

I agree that the PM2 LW will likely come first, and I'm still betting on a Manix2 LW Salt to match the Native5.

If I may extrapolate the equivalence from the Manix 2. Not sure how valid this is, but for science.
- G10 - 121g
- LW - 82g

That's 32% difference. So, for a PM2,
- G10 - 109g
- LW - 74g or 2.6oz

For a knife the size of a PM2, that would be pretty cool.

I am indifferent to Salt knives. Currently don't own any. I haven't had any problems exposing steel like S110V or even S30V to prolonged water use. I think I would take SE LW model over Salt. And I would take a tool steel LW PM2 over either of them.

Don't forget the wire clip!

......
Another way to extrapolate this would be to take the Para 3 as an equivalent, and the result is just about the same:

Para 3 G10: 96 g
Para 3 LW: 68 g
Difference about 29%

That would mean a PM2 LW would weigh 77 g which is really not far off your 74 g...

That being said: Just in my use and where I live I don´t need anything more rustproof than lets say VG10, and so no PM2 Salt for that (but an LW would generally be a great thing)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Hypothesis tested! Very nice!

Those extra grams in my calculation are to account for PB washers on both side of the blade :D

I bet we get a Para 3 LW Salt first. Then a PM2 LW. Then a PM2 LW Salt.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I definitely believe there are Salt versions Manix, PM2, Para 3, and Shaman in the works. They would sell them by the truckload. They could probably open another factory in Golden just to churn out these 4 models. Just takes a while (a long while) to iron out how to actually make all of the various components rust proof and test them.
