Mule Team MT28P CPM SPY27 Revealed!
Re: Mule Team MT28P CPM SPY27 Revealed!
Hoping we're getting closer to release! I haven't bought a new knife in several months which is very unusual but this one will be had if I'm lucky to snag one.

Wow, $70 for a 3.5" fixed blade that's somewhere between Cruwear and 3V? Holy sharp stuff batman!ykspydiefan wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 9:29 pmHey cycleguy,
I just scooped up a Pd1 mule.
Thanks for the tip.
Just ordered one with a leather sheath. Halpern seems to be out of stock, but I'll watch their site for some Micarta scales.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Re: Mule Team MT28P CPM SPY27 Revealed!
i don’t mean to derail, but what’s so special about pd1, cruwear, 3v, etc? i’ve prioritized corrosion resistance because i live in hawaii, but moving soon has me more open to other steels than i have been in the past few years.
on topic, do we know what the characteristics of spy27 are and how it will handle outdoor activities? i’ve seen it compared to s30v, but i’ve never used s30v in a fixed blade knife for camp chores and woodcraft.
thanks. :)

Re: Mule Team MT28P CPM SPY27 Revealed!
I saw pd1 looking cool on YouTube. It must be true. That's how I know. I have a Waterway too, I only ever use it for fish. So when it comes to edge performance I really have no idea about lc200n. It cuts as good as my old no name fillet knife, but its rust proof and that is super cool.
I heard a rumor that spy27 is super duper cool. No one really knows the characteristics as few people have tried it yet. New is cool, right? I think it would be cool to experience it in my limited non scientific and vicarious way. I know that I can't know unless I cut. And, when I am done cutting at the end of my days, I know the best thing I will say about any knife is, it was cool. Yeah, cool knife, cuts good.
The Mule Team project is probably the coolest thing in knife history surpassed only by YouTube/Internet and powder metal. It opens the dream of time, cutting, sharpening and actually feeling the differences in steel. Just a dream for me. If I had 2 mules I would test them to feel the difference. When I feel the differences in cutting and sharpening performance across the knives I own, I believe it is the whole knife and not really the steel. I have never thought to test any knife I own. Use=test.
The Mule Team is a singularity, it collapses the wave form, it is just the steel and a pure experience. Singularities are quantum cool. So, Spy27 Mule will be the coolest thing in all space and time.
Spoken like a guy that has never held a Spyderco Mule Team but is willing to oil one. Knife maintenance is skilled old-timer kind of cool.

Re: Mule Team MT28P CPM SPY27 Revealed!
Here's a little chart I made from the info from Larrin's KnifeSteelNerds article where he tested the edge retention of various steels and his charpy toughness tests. I think it does a fair job of showing what is so special about the steels.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 2:05 ami don’t mean to derail, but what’s so special about pd1, cruwear, 3v, etc? i’ve prioritized corrosion resistance because i live in hawaii, but moving soon has me more open to other steels than i have been in the past few years.

Re: Mule Team MT28P CPM SPY27 Revealed!
I think the best comparison is probably going to be VG-10. Should be easy to sharpen, pretty darn stain-resistant, and hold an edge pretty well.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 2:05 ami don’t mean to derail, but what’s so special about pd1, cruwear, 3v, etc? i’ve prioritized corrosion resistance because i live in hawaii, but moving soon has me more open to other steels than i have been in the past few years.

Re: Mule Team MT28P CPM SPY27 Revealed!
thank you for the chart. it raises a new question though. pd1 is supposed to be similar to cruwear and 3v, but those two are quite far apart on the chart. so, which is it closer to? and it seems that pd1 would make a better outdoor steel than spy27 because of toughness, right? not that soy27 wouldn’t work, but it would be balanced more toward edge holding than toughness.fixall wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 9:42 pmHere's a little chart I made from the info from Larrin's KnifeSteelNerds article where he tested the edge retention of various steels and his charpy toughness tests. Re: Mule Team MT28P CPM SPY27 Revealed!
I think VG10 is a great EDC steel because its super easy to sharpen back to a fine edge. In terms of bushcrafting, though, I’d go with a carbon steel, like a Mora. The Serrata might be a good choice as well. But for $50 I think the Spy27 mule will give you a lot of bang for your buck.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 11:15 pmi own zero vg10. how does it perform for camp chores and bushcrafting?kennethsime wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 10:00 pmI think the best comparison is probably going to be VG-10. Re: Mule Team MT28P CPM SPY27 Revealed!
PD#1 is just Carpenter's version of Cru-wear (made by Crucible). Cru-wear/PD#1 has quite a bit more carbon in it than 3V (as well as some other differences).ladybug93 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 11:14 pm

Here's a really awesome article by Larrin about the exact topic. :D
I agree with your conclusion that Cru-wear makes for a better outdoors fixed blade than VG-10 because of it's phenomenal toughness. The fact that you still get such wonderful edge retention out of Cru-wear along with the toughness is what makes it such an interesting steel (for knives) in my opinion.
That being said... Spyderco, Fallkniven, Al Mar, SOG, Kizer, and several other companies all feature VG-10 on some of their outdoor knives and it seems to perform just fine for people.

Thanks for the clarification fixall! I really couldn't find much on it, and found some references for PD#1 being similar to Cruwear and other for it being similar to 3V.
Pretty stoked to hear it's a Cruwear analog, I've been waiting to try it! And thanks for linking the article, great read.

Yea I ordered this week, mine gets here Tuesday. Picked up some OD Green G-10 scales from Halpern since they said Micarta would be out of stock until September. Is there a MT27 thread? :-)TomAiello wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 10:20 pmNo need to wait. PD#1 Mules were in stock last I looked. Thanks for this info, it’s good to know Halpern will be restocking with the MT coming back to life. I contacted Halpern about a month ago, and they said they were hoping to do a run of scales this summer, hopefully in july.Burton Knut wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 12:32 pmThanks for this info, it’s good to know Halpern will be restocking with the MT coming back to life. I used the contact form on their website and they got back to me and mentioned they had the G-10 scales, but it might have been the last set. Not listed on the site as in-stock right now, they had to process it manually for me.
