As far as the cheap polestar goes what is it going to do that a serrated tenacious wont do?

I guess it'll do everything but in BD1 instead of 8CR13 :confused:


Do we have any other SE/BD1 options that I don't know about?

We'd need to make a large quantity and they're not moving quickly enough to support the extra inventory. We're still testing. I think that Eric and Susan are planning a test run with a different handle. I can try to get teeth in some of those?

Teeth and an upgrade to BD1N (from BD1) would make the Polestar almost perfect as far as I am concerned... :)

But why a different handle?! The current textured G10 handle looks amazing...

When we have a model that is well designed and well made, but doesn't sell well, We have to study the market reaction to know what's happening. The Stretch is another example. Possibilities include, handle material, handle color, steel, country of origin, choils, etc.

"The market" sure is weird in some cases. And yes, the Stretch for me is the most puzzling example for that: Such a perfect design, but still not the biggest seller seemingly.

When it comes to the Polestar: My amateurish guess would be that some people look down on the steel and first and foremost link "linerlock" to "cheap" or "outdated", while imho a good linerlock is percfectly fine and even has some distinct advantages over other lock types.

I personally hope the amazing looking textured G10 will not disappear.

Working with China to put a comp lock on the Polestar would be an instant success I think. The handle is perfect, but the liner lock just makes it blend into the crowd at an increased price. As it stands, it's a very utilitarian piece that works well. But I know many think it is bland and with materials/lock that can be had at a lower price. A comp lock would change that.

Although I can see how having a comp lock in China can ruin the "prestige" of the US models, since it's a large selling point for paying a high price.

China/steel/liner lock. If this knife was made in Golden with a compression lock and any cliche steel people would be losing their minds over it. In some ways I get it and in other ways I don't. I just like the design and I'd like to try BD1 in SE.

Yeah, the scales on the Alcyone and Polestar are just visually unappealing to me vs solid peel ply G10. My ideal Polestar/Alcyone/Tenacious style knife would be a Golden made FRN LW backlock with Cruwear. It's honestly such a great design that shouldn't be pigeon-holed into chinese budget knifedom.

That said, I'd actually be fine with chinese-made if they could use Cruwear over there. If the current Tenacious LW was made in China with Cruwear i'd have a handful of them, even at the higher price.

Will the lockback version be "upgraded" to BD1N? I am very impressed by this steel in my Manix LW and think such an upgrade would help the Polestar.

And a lockback Polestar would be great, especially (but not only), since it would be another "edge all the way to the handle" lockback option.

You could try at least BD1N in SE in the Para 3 LW. Though from all I know I guess that's not your preferred size category of knives...
And then there are the serrated BD1N kitchen knives.

I' d also really like to try this steel in SE, I think it would be perfect for teeth (as I said in "my" "Manix LW SE ?" thread)
The Polestar is a platform that would be more than fine for that.

Can't wait! When you do get around to it, maybe straight to Cruwear for the production version will help prop up sales and can lead the way for a LW Cruwear production version. The new Tenacious LW is still on my short list for knives to get next. I'm a huge fan of the Tenacious series design. The liner lock is still a great lock, especially with gloves on.

Glad you say that. For me personally especially in harsher outdoor conditions the linerlock is a great solution, sometimes perhaps underestimated by people who never gave a well made (!) linerlock a real, fair try.
Still: I'd like a backlock version even better.
